PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. ? Pets have suddenly been dying in a Port St. Lucie neighborhood ? and the owners are wondering whether someone is poisoning them.

Police and Port St. Lucie Animal Control say it?s a mystery what killed at least six animals in the neighborhood.

Sue Coburn discovered her beloved dog, Roxy, dead Saturday after she came home from running errands. She says Roxy was healthy.

Coburn says it?s a devastating blow that many other neighbors have also gone through.

?When I came back, our dog was laying on the sidewalk right in front of our front door,? Coburn said. ?And she was dead.?

It started nearly a year ago just down Babylon Street in Port St. Lucie. That?s when when Madie Wubker?s cat, ironically named Lucky, also died suddenly. Wubker was Coburn?s next door neighbor.

?There was no reason for him to die,? Wubker said. ?It was hard on all of us, especially my little sisters because they?re still pretty young.?

Wubker believes her other cat, named Sugar, also suffered the same fate just a couple of weeks later. Wubker called Port St. Lucie Animal Control, which had been investigating. One possible culprit, according to Animal control: Anti-freeze.

?(Port St. Lucie Animal Control) said that because it?s a very sweet smell, the animals like to drink it,? Coburn said.

The question is, was it that or something else? And if it was anti-freeze, was it an accident for the five cats and one dog that died within six blocks of each other? Or, did someone intentionally put out the poison? The city says there?s no hard evidence of a crime at this point.

?Roxy was one of my children,? Coburn said. ?I can?t imagine what it?s going to be like without her.?

Sue says her other dog, Scooter, still hasn?t recovered.

?My other little Westie, was sitting next to her?and he was licking her ears and crying,? Coburn said. ?He knew she was gone.?

Port St. Lucie Animal Control said that if it can get some physical evidence that someone intentionally poisoned the animals, then it will get Port St. Lucie Police involved.

Until then, it will remain a mystery.
