How to unbalance nothingness

Friday, October 28, 2011

Nothingness ? this is the research subject-matter of a team of theoretical physicists from the Universities Jena (Germany) and Graz (Austria). "The ground state of our world can't be described by the absence of all matter," Professor Dr. Holger Gies from the Institute of Theoretical Physics of the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena and the Helmholtz-Institute Jena explains. "This so-called quantum vacuum rather turns out to be a complex state of constantly fluctuating quantum fields with physical properties."

The world-wide community of physicists is hoping to be able to witness a particularly spectacular characteristic in a few years' time: the spontaneous decay of the vacuum into pairs of particles of matter and antimatter in super strong electric fields. Due to the new research results of the Austro-German team of physicists, this goal came a few steps closer.

Although first theoretical consideration concerning the spontaneous decay of the vacuum dates back to the year 1931, its comprehensive understanding is still in its infancy. ?A great challenge in modern theoretical physics is the description of quantum fields out of equilibrium," Professor Gies explains. "We are facing this problem in phase transitions in the early Universe as well as in many experiments in solid state physics." Therefore experimental proof of the vacuum decay ? as it might be delivered by high intensity lasers in the near future ? will provide knowledge exceeding this particular field.

The scientists from Graz and Jena now succeeded calculating the time evolution of the vacuum decay in detail. "Even we were surprised by the results," Professor Gies confesses. According to the results particles of matter and antimatter behave in a novel self-focusing way and therefore the possibility of discovering them is higher than expected. "The quantum vacuum has already had some surprises in store," says the Heisenberg-Professor for Theoretical Physics. "To unbalance this nothingness could develop into a new prolific field of research."

Prevention Is Key for Fall Asthma Flare-Ups in Kids (HealthDay)

SUNDAY, Oct. 30 (HealthDay News) -- Children with asthma are at greater risk for flare-ups in the fall because of airborne ragweed and mold spores, as well as the flu and other seasonal infections, researchers warn.

Such flare-ups are marked by inflammation, swelling and tightening of the airways, resulting in wheezing, coughing and difficulty breathing. But, fortunately, it's possible to stave off these attacks, according to experts at the Johns Hopkins Children's Center.

"Year after year, we see a predictable spike in patient visits for asthma exacerbations in fall and winter, but many of these visits could be easily avoided with simple prevention," Dr. Robert Wood, director of allergy & immunology at Johns Hopkins Children's Center, said in a Hopkins news release.

Nearly 6.3 million children in the United States have asthma, making it the most common childhood chronic illness. However, the Hopkins experts said three key steps could help prevent flare-ups in these children:

  • Getting a flu shot. The flu and other respiratory infections can cause serious complications in children with asthma and other chronic conditions. The flu vaccine can prevent infections and minimize complications from the virus.
  • Avoiding asthma triggers. The best way to avoid asthma attacks is to avoid the triggers that cause them, including airborne allergens, cockroach and mouse allergens, industrial smog, household chemicals and bacterial and viral infections.
  • Using controller medications regularly. Children who experience asthma symptoms two or more times each week benefit from the regular use of controller medications, which suppress airway inflammation and prevent flare-ups.

"Over the summer, many patients have fewer asthma symptoms and cut down on their controller meds, but for most kids, symptoms will return with the change of season, so reverting to their regular drug regimens is critical," added Dr. Elizabeth Matsui, a pediatric allergist and immunologist at Johns Hopkins Children's Center, in the release.

Australia: Serial killer's relative convicted (AP)

SYDNEY ? A teenage relative of a notorious Australian serial killer was convicted of murder Monday after officials say he used an ax to slay a friend and left the body in the same forest where his infamous relative killed seven backpackers.

The teenager, whose name cannot be released because he was a minor at the time of the crime, pleaded guilty in western Sydney's Campbelltown Children's Court to killing 17-year-old David Auchterlonie. Auchterlonie's battered body was found last year in the remote Belanglo State Forest southwest of Sydney.

The teen convicted in the slaying is a relative of Ivan Milat, who is serving a life sentence for killing seven young backpackers between 1989 and 1992. Milat buried his victims in shallow graves in the Belanglo forest.

According to court documents, the teen bragged to his friends a day after killing Auchterlonie: "I killed somebody last night."

In court papers, officials said the teen, Auchterlonie and two friends drove into the forest on the night of Nov. 20, 2010. The killing and the dialogue that preceded it was captured in a mobile phone video taken by one member of the group.

The video shows Auchterlonie rolling a marijuana cigarette in the front seat when the teen, who was standing by the trunk of the car, called out to him. Auchterlonie got out of the car to join him. The teen then swung an ax into Auchterlonie's torso, accusing him of telling people the teen had stolen money from his own mother, according to court papers.

Auchterlonie tried to run away, but the teen chased him down and forced him to lie on the ground. The teen continued to accuse Auchterlonie of spreading rumors, and then struck him on the back of the head with the ax. The sound of the ax striking the victim and the victim's last breath can be heard in the video recording, according to the court papers.

The teen and one of his friends then covered Auchterlonie's body with branches before all three left the forest in the car.

Auchterlonie's father, whose name is also David Auchterlonie, said his son was "a character" who was always getting into trouble.

"Just a general teenager doing what silly kids do," the elder David Auchterlonie told reporters outside court. "It's been nearly a year since his death. I'm sure he would've grown out of his ways and maybe these kids as well."

Auchterlonie's killer will be sentenced on Dec. 2. He faces up to life in prison.

Aussie coast fears rogue shark may have killed 3 (AP)

CANBERRA, Australia ? The sudden death of an American diver in the jaws of a great white shark off Australia's southwest coast has raised the specter of a rogue man-eater preying on a renowned aquatic playground and killing three men in two months.

Scientists say three sharks more likely are responsible, and the three cases are sheerly unfortunate encounters with nature.

Australia's southwest corner has been better known for whale and dolphin-watching cruises, white sandy beaches, world-class surf breaks and the peppery shiraz of its Margaret River premium wineries than for fatal shark attacks.

"This is a unique set of circumstances, and I'm desperately ... praying this is not the beginning of a new trend ... and we're going to have these on a regular basis," Western Australia state Fisheries Minister Norman Moore said Sunday, referring to the three recent deadly attacks.

The latest was Saturday when American George Thomas Wainwright, 32, was attacked while diving solo off a boat near Rottnest Island, a few miles (kilometers) from the city of Perth in Western Australia state.

As a child, family members said Wainwright was always on the water pursuing his loves: boating, fishing and diving.

In Panama City, Florida, he was only 17 or 18 years old when he became among the youngest residents to get his captain's license, his younger sister Wanda Brannon, 30, told The Associated Press on Sunday. He later ran a charter boat business.

"His love and passion was being on the water," she said.

Wainwright, who went by the name Thomas, also helped with the oil spill cleanup and even appeared in a BP video, after an oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico last year, she said.

He moved to Australia six months ago, taking a job as a project manager with a marine company. Brannon said her brother loved Australia's beautiful landscapes and relished his new adventures there. He had recently emailed family members about returning to Florida for a Christmas visit.

"He was just an amazing individual with a love and a passion for the outdoors and for his family," Brannon said through tears.

The Western Australia state government set tuna-baited hooks off the island Sunday, the first time authorities have used an emergency legal exemption from the state protection of great whites as an endangered species in the interests of protecting the public.

Western Australia Premier Colin Barnett also said his government would consider shark culls, responding to locals' complaints that shark numbers are increasing off bustling beaches in one of Australia's fastest growing population areas.

But Barry Bruce, a federal government marine biologist with extensive research experience in tracking the movements of tagged great whites via satellite and in examining their behavior, said it was unlikely that a single, lurking predator killed the three recent victims.

"What we've seen tragically is three cases of people by sheer bad luck being in the wrong place at the wrong time," he said.

"If you're in the path of a white shark that is in the process of hunting its natural prey, that's an exceptionally dangerous situation to find yourself in," he added.

He said the great white population was not growing but shifting around the world for reasons that scientists do not fully understand.

Great whites are known to follow whale migration up the west Australian coast through the current spring and return south late in the summer.

Bruce dismissed theories of a single man-eater as unfounded speculation.

"A more plausible explanation is that this is the time of year when sharks move along the coast, and there are undoubtedly multiple sharks out there following this exact pattern," Bruce said.

Barbara Weuringer, a University of Western Australia marine zoologist and shark researcher, agreed. She urged against a shark hunt, saying there was no way of telling which shark was the killer without killing it and opening its stomach.

"It sounds a little bit like taking revenge, and we're talking about an endangered species," Weuringer said.

But a southwest coast-based diving tourism operator called on the state government to kill sharks that pose a threat to humans.

"The nuisance sharks ? the problem sharks that move into an area and are aggressive ? should be dispatched to remove the risk of future attack," Rockingham Wild Encounters director Terry Howson told the AP.

Howson has been campaigning for government action on sharks since one of his tour guides, Elyse Frankcom, was injured in a shark attack last year.

"It's absolutely hurting the tourist trade," he said. "Australia is getting a name for itself as being full of dangerous animals."

Wainwright's two companions said the diver was already dead when his body surfaced beside their boat moments after a flurry of bubbles had erupted on the gray ocean surface.

The shark, a 10-foot (3-meter) great white, surfaced and even nudged the dive boat as Wainwright's friends hauled in his remains and powered for shore, officials said.

A great white of the same size is believed to have taken a 64-year-old Australian swimmer off Perth city's premier Cottesloe Beach on Oct. 10. The beach is 11 miles (18 kilometers) east of Rottnest Island.

The man's remains were not found, but his shredded swimming trunks suggested the size and type of shark that took him.

Both attacks followed the Sept. 4 death of a bodyboarder attacked by a shark described as 15 feet (4.5 meters) long at a beach south of Perth. Witnesses were unsure of the type of shark.

The continent averages little more than one fatal attack a year along an expansive 22,000-mile (35,000 kilometer) coast. But it is a primary home of the fearsome great whites, a large species in which some animals can grow to 20 feet (6 meters) in length.

The film classic "Jaws" famously used a mechanical shark for close-up action, but live shark footage was filmed in Australia. One is a scene in which Richard Dreyfuss is in an underwater shark cage, and live sharks doubled for the movie killer in long-range shots as well.

When it comes to picking talent, Akon's ear is golden. Credited with discovering T-Pain as well as being an early cog in Lady Gaga's career, Akon looks to add to his executive résumé by signing singer/songwriter Verse Simmonds to his KonLive label.

"I think he's going to be the next biggest thing under the brand that's going to take it to the next level," Akon said. "He has everything it takes, internationally and domestically."

Simmonds broke out in 2009 with his catchy alcohol ode "Buy You a Round." Though he was always close with Akon, Verse continued to grind on his own, making singles, doing shows, writing songs and producing. In August, Verse, along with his production partner Sak Pase, landed a few tracks on Jay-Z and Kanye West's Watch the Throne.

Simmonds' latest single, "Boo Thang," from his Sextape Chronicles 2 mixtape, features Kelly Rowland and has once again put him back in the spotlight. Perfect time to sign a new deal.

"It definitely felt like the right thing to do, and it was time. I been working, I been grinding," Verse said. "Me and my team just been on the road grinding for the past two years since 'Buy You a Round,' and we just been building up our credits as far as the writing and production side as well as just making sure we stay active on the artist side."

Akon has been impressed: For him, Verse's early success seems all too familiar. "Everything that I see in myself, I see in Verse — I might just be a little more handsome," he joked. "Honestly, he's a hard worker, a great songwriter, a great producer, great artist, a great performer. That's pretty much everything that's qualified to be a great superstar in this business."

What do you think about Akon signing Verse Simmonds? Tell us in the comments!

Staness Jonekos: 10 Ways to Lower Your Risk of Getting Breast Cancer

According to the American Cancer Society, "Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, exceeded only by lung cancer." About 1 out of every 7 women will get breast cancer over a 90-year life span. All women are at risk for breast cancer.

This year about 207,090 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women. About 40,000 moms, daughters, sisters, granddaughters and best friends that will die from breast cancer this year.

The American Cancer Society states, "Death rates from breast cancer have been declining since about 1990, with larger decreases in women younger than 50. These decreases are believed to be the result of earlier detection through screening and increased awareness, as well as improved treatment."

The chance that breast cancer will be responsible for a woman's death is about 1 in 35 (about 3 percent). At this time there are over 2.5 million breast cancer survivors in the United States.

A woman's risk of breast cancer approximately doubles if she has a first-degree relative (mother, sister, daughter) who has been diagnosed with breast cancer. About 20-30 percent of women diagnosed with breast cancer have a family history of breast cancer.

About 70-80 percent of breast cancers occur in women who have no family history of breast cancer due to genetic abnormalities that happen as a result of the aging process and life in general, rather than inherited mutations.

There are ways to reduce your risk.

What can you do to lower your risk of getting breast cancer?

1. Maintain an ideal weight: The chance of developing breast cancer after menopause is higher in women who are overweight or obese.

2. Exercise: The American Cancer Society recommends engaging in 45-60 minutes of physical exercise 5 or more days a week.

3. Limit alcohol consumption: Alcohol can limit your liver's ability to control blood levels of the hormone estrogen, which in turn can increase risk. The Harvard Nurses' Health study, along with several others, has shown that consuming more than one alcoholic beverage a day can increase breast cancer risk by as much as 20-25 percent.

4. Exposure to estrogen: The female hormone estrogen stimulates breast cell growth, so exposure to estrogen over long periods of time, without breaks, can increase the risk of breast cancer.

5. Oral contraceptive use: Recent use may slightly increase a woman's risk for breast cancer.

6. Enjoy fruits and vegetables: Broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, kale, spinach, carrots, tomatoes, cauliflower, berries and cherries are all breast cancer fighters.

7. Reduce high glycemic carbohydrates: Eat low to medium glycemic foods and avoid white rice, white potatoes and sugar products, because these foods may trigger hormonal changes that promote cellular growth in breast tissue. Eat whole grains and legumes.

8. Stop smoking: Smoking is associated with an increase in breast cancer risk and in the risk of other cancers.

9. Reduce stress and anxiety: There is no clear proof that stress and anxiety can increase breast cancer risk, but some research suggests that practicing yoga, prayer and meditation to manage stress can strengthen the immune system.

10. Perform monthly breast self-exams, get routine screenings and work closely with your health care provider.

We cannot control our gender, age, race or family history of breast cancer, but early detection can save lives. Performing a monthly breast self-exam is something you can control.

Nearly 70 percent of all breast cancers are found through self-exams, and with early detection the 5-year survival rate is 98 percent.

Dr. Wendy Klein, leading women's health expert and co-author of "The Menopause Makeover" says:

Discuss your breast self-exam technique with your healthcare provider, and report any asymmetrical changes in your breast right away. Regular breast self-exams in conjunction with other screening methods, working closely with your doctor, are simple common sense for good breast health.

Today I celebrate my health by lowering my breast cancer risk factors. Today I honor my breast health empowered. Today I do a breast self-exam.

No Bigotry Pass for Cain on Account of His Race (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Herman Cain shouldn't get a pass on bigotry just because he's black. The theme song of desegregation was not "We Shall Overcompensate." It was, "We Shall Overcome," and I for one have had just about enough unchecked bigotry from this man currently tied in the polls with Mitt Romney for the nomination.

And I'm not just referring to his recent insinuation that 11 million Mexican nationals are coming into America and killing Americans. I'm speaking of his repeated bigotry toward Muslims.

Take his comment when asked if he would be comfortable hiring them into his Cabinet: "No. I will not. And here's why: There is this creeping attempt. ... There is this attempt to gradually ease Sharia law and the Muslim faith into our government. It does not belong in our government."

Later, he told Glenn Beck that he would be OK with hiring Muslims if they passed a constitutional loyalty test. Beck pressed him, asking whether he would apply the same test to Catholics and Muslims. "No. No I wouldn't because there is a greater dangerous part of the Muslim Faith than there is any of these other religions," Cain said.

Imagine if a white candidate said such things about black people. How long would that candidate last as a contender for the White House?

In 1948 Strom Thurmond ran for president as a segregationist. Fifty-four years later, then-Sen. Trent Lott, during a birthday wish for the 100-year-old elder statesman, said "If Strom had been elected president in 1948, we might not have all the problems that we have now." Immediately, charges of racism smacked him and shortly thereafter lead to his resignation.

Mel Gibson was fairly well kicked out of his profession for a racist tirade against Jews. Republican Rick Perry of Texas lost his spot as the Republican front-runner largely as the result of a ranch he owns that once had a derogatory name.

So what does it say when a black candidate is openly peddling bigotry yet rising in the polls to become the co-front-runner for the GOP nomination to the presidency?

He might get a pass for his bigotry by some writers, but not this one. Black people can be bigots too, and in the case of Cain, I'm calling him out. He's a bigot and he has no place in American politics.

New housing plan expected soon: Congress aide (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The Obama administration and the regulator for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are expected to unveil new steps to help distressed homeowners in the next week or two, a senior congressional aide said on Thursday.

The aide commented on the plan after Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein said the Federal Reserve planned to send Congress "legislative recommendations" on housing.

The aide said Feinstein "misspoke for a second" and meant the administration and the Federal Housing Finance Agency.

After Senate Democrats met with Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke, Feinstein told reporters the central bank chief had stressed that more needed to be done to help the housing sector.

"They are going to submit a list of recommendations next week," Feinstein told reporters. She said the pending proposals are "legislative recommendations we can look at."

Senator Mark Warner, who also attended the meeting, said Bernanke spoke about what can be done to get mortgage refinance moved "down the field."

"There might be some ideas we are going to have shortly on that," he told reporters after the meeting.

It is unclear what Congress might do given deep political divisions in the House of Representatives and the Senate.

A handful of Senators are trying to advance a proposal that would make it easier for middle-class Americans to buy homes in expensive real estate markets.

Separately, the administration is pushing the regulator for Fannie Mae (FNMA.OB) and Freddie Mac (FMCC.OB), the two biggest U.S. housing finance providers, to allow more homeowners who owe more than their homes are worth to refinance their loans at lower rates.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said on Tuesday he hoped a proposal could be laid out "in the coming days." A source familiar with the plans told Reuters they could be unveiled as early as Monday.

The Fed has been exploring what steps it might be able to take to spur a more vigorous economic recovery and pull down an unemployment rate that has been stuck above 9 percent for five straight months.

On Thursday, Fed Governor Daniel Tarullo said the central bank should consider purchasing more mortgage-backed securities.

He said an MBS purchase program could be made more effective if further steps were taken to help so-called underwater borrowers refinance. He said such an effort need not focus only on loans backed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, but that legislation might be needed if policymakers wanted to reach other homeowners.

The U.S. central bank has kept overnight interest rates near zero since December 2009 and has already bought $2.3 trillion in government and mortgage-related bonds.

In September, it decided to shift its holding of bonds to try to put more downward pressure on longer-term rates. It also said it would begin reinvesting principal payments from its holdings of mortgage-related debt to help housing.

Argentine young turn to politics to serve leader (AP)

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina ? A determined young crowd advances down the avenue despite a steady drizzle, beating drums, setting off fireworks and handing out pamphlets. They aren't lashing out in anger, like the unemployed youths of Europe, Chile's student marchers or America's "Occupy Wall Street" activists.

These young Argentines like their government, and want it to become even more powerful.

President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner is expected to win re-election by a landslide Sunday. Polls suggest she could come away with a first-round majority and consolidate her support in Congress against a splintered opposition. Key to the victory is her conquest of a generation that wasn't even born during country's bloody 1976-1983 dictatorship, whose legacy has shaped nearly every aspect of her political views.

She has won over the new generation by encouraging them to try to change their world, just as activists of her generation thought they could do before Argentina's last military coup silenced them and unleashed a bloodbath that officially killed 13,000 people and set the country's democracy back for years.

"The whole world is shocked by how young people are getting involved in politics in Argentina," the president said after the chants of flag-waving supporters repeatedly interrupted one of her final campaign appearances. "No, they shouldn't be shocked in any way, because when utopia is reborn, you'll always find young people there."

Pre-election polls show the strongest support for Fernandez, 58, rests among two cohorts: people who, like Fernandez, were in their early 20s in 1976 and saw firsthand how armed conflict gave way to state-sponsored terror, and people who came of age during the next terrible blow to Argentine society, the 2001 financial crisis that all but destroyed the country's economy.

Keeping fresh the memories of these two years has been essential to the model of governing that she and her late-husband Nestor Kirchner began when he was elected in 2003. She invokes these dark chapters in nearly every campaign speech, summoning up old enemies and shaping them into new threats while passionately promising that her government will protect the country against them. Kirchner did this too, before he suddenly died of a heart attack last October.

"With the 2001 collapse, the message to our generation is that we had to sacrifice," said Sebastian Zabalia, 30, a marketing graduate whose Militancia Kreativa brings together artists in support of the president. "Just as we were joining the work force, they told us, 'All the dreams that you have are going to end. Don't dream anymore.' And then two years later a guy shows up who tells us, 'I've come to propose to you a dream.' And he didn't stop there. It's inevitable that you see yourself getting involved in this project."

Argentina has now enjoyed its longest stretch of democratic rule since a series of coups began in 1930, and one of its most sustained periods of economic growth. Spending enormously to encourage consumption and keep the economy growing at nearly 8 percent annually, Fernandez's government says it has reduced unemployment from 20 percent in 2003 to 7 percent today, and poverty from 54 percent to 8 percent this year.

Private economists question the numbers, but it's clear that Argentina has come back strong under the Kirchners, thanks to a combination of high commodity prices and classic Keynesian spending. They encouraged unions and businesses to negotiate higher salaries, established cash transfer payments for each child in low-income families, raised pensions for retirees and dedicated millions in subsidies to keep transportation and public services affordable.

The Kirchners' leadership marks a huge contrast from their predecessors, who lacked the capacity to meet social and economic challenges, said Leandro Lopina, a 29-year-old activist. But the Kirchners also have made a point of recruiting and promoting younger Argentine followers, which in turn has helped restore their faith in politics.

"This is the first political project that opened its doors to young people, and not just to give them a little corner to do useless things, but to really include them in at the center of political action," Lopina said. "I believe that we young people are the guarantee that this can continue and improve, because there are obviously pending challenges."

The most loyal of Fernandez's supporters belong to a movement called "La Campora," named after President Hector Campora, who was elected in March 1973 as the personal delegate of former President Juan Peron to end the previous military junta's 18-year-old ban on Peronist activities. Campora stepped aside months later to make way for Peron's brief return to power.

Fernandez's son Maximo Kirchner founded La Campora, and she has leaned on the group more than ever since her husband's death, to provide support at campaign appearances and begin to challenge the Peronist party's old guard for elected positions.

"Cristina surrounds herself with the Campora because she doesn't trust anyone ? not the politicians, not her own ministers. That's why her son provided her with this 'praetorian guard' that she thinks protects her," said political analyst Jorge Giacobbe, whose polling firm, like others, predicts she'll win in the first round.

One Campora member manages the state-owned Aerolineas Argentinas. Another was recently selected to represent government stockholders on the board of Techint, a powerful conglomerate. About 20 others were included at Fernandez's request on ruling party candidate lists.

"Our real fight begins the day after the election," said Andres Larroque, 34, secretary general of La Campora and candidate for Congress, as hundreds of activists prepared to march through the capital. "That which we recovered, that which Juan Peron founded, to which Evita gave her spirit, which Nestor recovered and that we now live thanks to Cristina obviously will be attacked again by those anti-patriotic interests. We need to become guardians of the legacy of Nestor and soldiers for Cristina."

Analysts believe Fernandez's young supporters could play a key role over the next four years.

"After the elections, the succession fight begins within Peronism," said Mariel Fornoni, with the consulting firm Management & Fit. "New internal disputes will emerge. The challenge of politics is how to hold onto power. That's why she values loyalty so highly."

The Kirchners were young activists themselves as they cut their political teeth in the university city of La Plata.

Their cause was the leftist Peronist Youth party, and some of their comrades were directly involved in armed resistance to the 1960s junta.

La Campora is completely different. It's created by the government, with functionaries and taxpayer money and no grass roots movement to back it up, said Marcelo Larraquy, who has written several books about the last 40 years of Argentine youth movements.

Those youths challenged authority, while these profit from it, he said, adding, "It's top-down and unquestioningly repeats a script."

But other young Argentines who lack any personal connections also advocate for Fernandez's government, many using social networks to express their views. Many were directly affected by the social breakdowns of 2001, when thousands of people hit the streets to protest the currency devaluation and loan defaults that caused soaring unemployment.

"Throw them all out," was their battle cry, and politicians seemed incapable of responding.

A young woman who goes by the username "La Pipi" on her popular pro-government blog said she supported Fernandez because the Kirchners rescued the country from economic collapse. She refused to identify herself because she works for a major company and said she fears getting fired for using Twitter and her blog to challenge the opposition. She also helped to create a Facebook page where people can contribute wish lists for a second Fernandez term.

"I live in a neighborhood of poor housing and many small factories," the 36-year-old explained as she recruited other bloggers at a science fair. "And I saw how people lowered their blinds and the streets filled with young people taking drugs due to the 2001 crisis. And later I saw that people's blinds began lifting again, and the kids aren't out there anymore, but are now going to work in the factories."

CDC: Add $2 per drink for US excessive drinking (AP)

ATLANTA ? The toll of excessive drinking works out to about $2 per drink, in terms of medical expenses and other costs to society, according to a new federal research.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study calculated societal costs from binge and heavy drinking beyond what consumers pay at the bar or liquor store. It's the first such federal estimate in more than a dozen years.

The study looked at costs that included ? among other things ? lost work productivity, property damage from car crashes, expenditures for liver cirrhosis and other alcohol-associated medical problems, and money spent on incarceration of drunk drivers and criminals using alcohol.

The CDC estimated excessive drinking cost society nearly $224 billion in 2006, the most recent year for which all necessary statistics were available. That worked out to about $1.90 per drink, 80 cents of which was spent by federal, state or local governments, the researchers estimated. The rest came from drinkers, their families, private health insurers, employers, crime victims and others.

Most of that was related to binge drinking, in which four or five alcoholic beverages are consumed on one occasion.

"Binge drinking results in binge spending," said CDC Director Dr. Thomas Frieden.

CDC officials noted that while some health benefits have been associated with, say, a glass of wine each day, there are no health benefits linked to excessive drinking. They also said the new study likely represents an underestimate of the total cost.

Smoking has been estimated to cost society about $193 billion annually. An older study estimated the cost of not exercising to be around $150 billion.

The study was released Monday by the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

Shale gas helps Halliburton profit beat Street (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Halliburton Co (HAL.N), the world's second-largest oilfield services company, posted a higher-than-expected quarterly profit as more drillers tapped its expertise in extracting gas from U.S. shale rock.

Despite low natural gas prices, demand for shale energy continues to grow across the United States amid calls for energy independence and a push for cheap supply from the chemical and transportation sectors.

Halliburton shares fell 0.7 percent in premarket trading. Dahlman Rose & Co analyst James Crandell said the strong earnings likely will have "neutral implications" for the shares Monday.

Third-quarter net profit climbed to $683 million, or 74 cents per share, from $544 million, or 60 cents per share, a year earlier.

Excluding one-time items, Halliburton earned 94 cents per share, topping analysts' average estimate of 92 cents, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Revenue rose 40 percent to $6.55 billion. Analysts had expected $6.39 billion.

Producers are plowing billions of dollars into developing U.S. oil shale fields, tightening the market for equipment and allowing the services companies to maintain higher prices.

Many analysts expect the North American shale boom to last at least through 2012, even with the weak American economy.

"Despite short-term macroeconomic concerns, I continue to believe in the long-term prospects for our business," Halliburton Chief Executive Dave Lesar said in a statement.

The company said delays in operations in Iraq and an operational shutdown in Libya during the third quarter hurt results.

Halliburton said profit from operations outside the United States "recovered at the rate we expected" during the quarter.

Three rigs did start operating in Iraq toward the end of the quarter, however. And in Libya, where rebels have ousted ruler Muammar Gaddafi, the company is assessing whether to reopen.

Halliburton has put behind it a major liability attached to former unit KBR Inc (KBR.N), which just settled a five-year dispute over failed bolts on subsea oilfield flow lines off Brazil for $200 million.

Shares of Houston-based Halliburton fell 0.7 percent to $27.48 in premarket trading. The stock has dropped 8.3 percent this year.

S&P 500 index poised to extend streak (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? With one-third of the Dow components and crowd favorite, Apple, reporting results next week, U.S. stocks are setting the stage for another week of gains.

After the steepest two-week rally in more than two years, the S&P 500 is at the top end of its range for the past two months.

The benchmark closed Friday above 1,220 for the first time since early August, and bets against the recent rally could start to pile up.

But Monday earnings and guidance from IBM (IBM.N), followed by results from Apple (AAPL.O), Coca-Cola (KO.N) and Intel (INTC.O) on Tuesday could give shorts a reason to put their guns down. The S&P could be on its way to a third straight winning week --a streak not seen since February.

"There are some fundamental catalysts which could play right into the momentum," said Richard Ross, global technical strategist for Auerbach Grayson in New York.

He said the S&P 500 "has potential to take out that well defined resistance (at 1,220) and it would be a fast move up to the next level, between 1,265 and 1,275."

The sharp turnaround in stocks from a 2011 low hit Tuesday took many by surprise, and buying has spurred more buying as traders and money managers try to catch up with the benchmark's performance.

The pattern repeated itself Friday, with the three major indexes closing at or near session highs.

For the week, the Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) gained 4.9 percent, the S&P 500 (.SPX) added 6 percent, and the Nasdaq Composite (.IXIC) rose 7.6 percent.

Ten of the 30 Dow components, including Microsoft (MSFT.O), American Express (AXP.N) and Johnson & Johnson (JNJ.N), are scheduled to report quarterly results next week.

Big financial names expected to report include Citigroup (C.N), Goldman Sachs (GS.N) and Wells Fargo (WFC.N), which follow Thursday's earnings disappointment from JPMorgan Chase & Co (JPM.N) that battered the sector.

Reported and estimated earnings growth for the current earnings season is seen at 12.4 percent for all S&P 500 companies, according to Thomson Reuters data. That is down from this year's estimate peak of 17 percent in July.

But companies like Apple and IBM, which hit lifetime closing highs on Friday, are expected to trounce expectations. And positive surprises could play into the buying momentum.

"Price will start to discount even more optimism," said Wasif Latif, vice president of equity investments at the San Antonio, Texas-based USAA Investment Management, which manages about $45 billion in mutual funds.

"Growth companies, given the high expectations, need to have a 'wow' factor when it comes to reporting and beating earnings," he said, adding it was certainly possible for these two names to rise further.

The VIX volatility gauge (.VIX) has declined in the past weeks, closing on Friday at its lowest level since August 3. That could translate into less uncertainty and more of the buying frenzy that drove the S&P 500 to its largest two-week percentage advance since mid 2009.

ECONOMY: LESS BAD THAN FEARED

Softening economic numbers in the United States and abroad, as well as a grinding expansion of the euro zone sovereign debt crisis, stymied investors and drove stocks and commodity prices to heavy losses in the third quarter.

But despite Greece's slow crawl toward a default and rising borrowing costs in Spain and Italy, the perception of efficient action in Europe gave investors the confidence to return to equities --or at least cover their short bets.

Economic numbers, expected at a certain point in the summer to show the U.S. economy was sliding back into recession, have generally come in above those lowered estimates.

USAA's Latif said that even if current levels are subdued and expectations are lowered "it's definitely very encouraging" to have data land better than expected.

Among the main economic indicators due next week are industrial production and capacity utilization on Monday; producer and consumer inflation on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively; and weekly jobless claims on Thursday. The week closes with the final reading of the Reuters/University of Michigan consumer sentiment index.

Six antiwar, economic protesters arrested at Senate offices (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Six people were arrested on Tuesday during a protest in a Senate office building involving antiwar and Occupy DC demonstrators, police and participants said.

The group of about 100 protesters unfurled upside-down flags -- a symbol of distress -- and antiwar banners in the atrium of the Hart Senate Office Building, which houses senators' personal offices and some committee rooms.

They chanted "We are the 99 percent" and "Stop the wars" until Capitol police cleared the area, participants and observers said.

The protest had been planned for months by such antiwar groups as Veterans for Peace and Code Pink to mark the 10th anniversary of the invasion of Afghanistan.

However, the event drew participants as well from the Occupy DC protest, a local version of the anti-corporate Occupy Wall Street demonstrations that have spread nationwide.

The "99 percent" chant has been a feature of those demonstrations, reflecting the protesters' view that the country's wealthiest one percent have too much and are too powerful.

The Washington protesters said there was a common philosophy underlying the antiwar and anti-Wall Street movements.

"We certainly want to end the wars, but our message is much broader than that. There's a corrupt corporate America that's running this country. One percent are making the decisions for the rest of us," said Mike Tork, a Vietnam veteran from Falmouth, Mass., who is involved with Veterans for Peace.

Police arrested six protesters and charged them with unlawful conduct for demonstrating inside a Capitol building, a police spokeswoman said.

Over the past weeks, demonstrators from different protests have set up camps at two sites in downtown Washington near the White House.

The number of Occupy DC protesters camped out in McPherson Square a few blocks north of the White House had risen to about 60 at midday on Tuesday, well above the dozen or so there last week.

The site also showed more permanence, with tents, tarps, sleeping bags, a food table and piles of other equipment laid out.

"I'm hard pressed to think what could be offered to appease people who are showing up here and all across the country. They aren't going to be appeased by the lesser of two evils," Peter Vos, a 52-year-old teacher of computer skills to prison inmates, said after he dropped off 100 ponchos for protesters.

At a separate protest with aims similar to that of Occupy DC, the Park Service has offered the Stop the Machine movement a four-month extension of its occupation of Freedom Plaza in central Washington, organizer Dr. Margaret Flowers said.

"We feel that we're part of the same movement. The most important thing that we're doing is getting people out and protesting," Flowers told Reuters.

A Park Service spokesman was not available to comment.

Discovery could make fuel and plastics production more energy efficient and cost effective

Discovery could make fuel and plastics production more energy efficient and cost effective

Wednesday, October 12, 2011

A University of Minnesota team of researchers has overcome a major hurdle in the quest to design a specialized type of molecular sieve that could make the production of gasoline, plastics and various chemicals more cost effective and energy efficient. The research, led by chemical engineering and materials science professor Michael Tsapatsis in the university's College of Science and Engineering, is published in the most recent issue of the journal Science.

After more than a decade of research, the team devised a means for developing free-standing, ultra-thin zeolite nanosheets that as thin films can speed up the filtration process and require less energy. The team has a provisional patent and hopes to commercialize the technology.

"In addition to research on new renewable fuels, chemicals and natural plastics, we also need to look at the production processes of these and other products we use now and try to find ways to save energy," Tsapatsis said.

Separating mixed substances can demand considerable amounts of energy?currently estimated to be approximately 15 percent of the total energy consumption?part of which is wasted due to process inefficiencies. In days of abundant and inexpensive fuel, this was not a major consideration when designing industrial separation processes such as distillation for purifying gasoline and polymer precursors. But as energy prices rise and policies promote efficiency, the need for more energy-efficient alternatives has grown.

One promising option for more energy-efficient separations is high-resolution molecular separation with membranes. They are based on preferential adsorption and/or sieving of molecules with minute size and shape differences. Among the candidates for selective separation membranes, zeolite materials (crystals with molecular-sized pores) show particular promise.

While zeolites have been used as adsorbents and catalysts for several decades, there have been substantial challenges in processing zeolitic materials into extended sheets that remain intact. To enable energy-savings technology, scientists needed to develop cost-effective, reliable and scalable deposition methods for thin film zeolite formation.

The University of Minnesota team used sound waves in a specialized centrifuge process to develop "carpets" of flaky crystal-type nanosheets that are not only flat, but have just the right amount of thickness. The resulting product can be used to separate molecules as a sieve or as a membrane barrier in both research and industrial applications.

"We think this discovery holds great promise in commercial applications," said Kumar Varoon, a University of Minnesota chemical engineering and materials science Ph.D. candidate and one of the primary authors of the paper published in Science. "This material has good coverage and is very thin. It could significantly reduce production costs in refineries and save energy."

Hear ye, hear ye: UK royal heirs may wed Catholics

A 300-year-old ban on heirs to the British throne marrying Roman Catholics would be overturned and discrimination against royal daughters removed under reforms proposed on Wednesday by Prime Minister David Cameron.

Cameron has written to the leaders of the 15 other realms who share Queen Elizabeth as their monarch, including the Solomon Islands and the Grenadines, to request their approval, his office said.

Cameron wants to banish laws dating back to 1688 and 1700 designed to ensure a Protestant monarchy and barring anyone in line to the throne from marrying a Roman Catholic unless they relinquished their claim to the crown.

Tiny kingdom of Bhutan prepares for royal wedding

Only a Catholic link is barred ? there are no restrictions on Jews, Hindus, Muslims or even atheists.

The rules have their roots in a turbulent period of English history dating back to Henry VIII's break with Rome that saw Catholics feared as a threat to the security of the state.

"This rule is a historical anomaly," Cameron said in his letter. "It does not, for example, bar those who marry spouses of other faiths ? and we do not think it can continue to be justified."

The government also want the order of royal succession to be determined purely by age and not by sex. Until now, male heirs have taken precedence over female heirs, regardless of age.

The issue has been brought into focus by this year's wedding of Prince William, second-in-line to the throne, and Kate Middleton.

Without a change to the rules, William and Kate's first son would eventually become king even if he had an older sister.
