NASHVILLE, Tenn. ? Country music supergroup Rascal Flatts is the latest member of the Grand Ole Opry.

The trio was surprised with the news Tuesday night during their performance on the Opry. Twenty-year Opry member Vince Gill made an unscheduled appearance, interrupting singer Gary LeVox, bassist Jay DeMarcus and guitarist Joe Don Rooney mid-performance.

The men had tears in their eyes and the crowd gave them a standing ovation.

Rascal Flatts is the top-selling country group of the last decade. The trio joins a recent slate of longtime stars invited to join, including Blake Shelton and The Oak Ridge Boys.

Opry membership is among the highest honors for a country musician. It comes with an ambassador-like commitment to the history of the genre and a requirement to perform at least 10 times a year.

Huge floods in Manila as typhoon hits Philippines (AP)

MANILA, Philippines ? Massive flooding hit the Philippine capital on Tuesday as typhoon winds and rains isolated the historic old city where residents waded in waist-deep waters, dodging tree branches and debris. At least seven people were killed.

Authorities ordered more than 100,000 people across the country to shelter from Typhoon Nesat's rains and wind gusts of up to 106 miles (170 kilometers) per hour. Schools and offices were shuttered, and thousands were stranded by grounded flights and ferries kept in ports.

The typhoon made landfall before dawn over eastern mountainous provinces of Isabela and Aurora, which face the Pacific Ocean, then headed inland through farmlands north of Manila, the government weather bureau said. It was packing sustained winds of 87 mph (140 kph).

The first reported death was a 1 year old who drowned in the central island province of Cataduanes after falling into a river, the government disaster agency reported. As the typhoon moved into Manila, a mother and child were killed after their house was hit by a falling tree in the suburb of Caloocan, and four were reported killed by a collapsing wall in the suburb of Valenzuela.

Four fishermen were missing while more than 50 others were rescued along eastern shores after their boats overturned in choppy seas. Forecasters warned of 12-foot-high (4-meter-high) waves.

Along downtown Manila's baywalk, cars and buses were stuck and residents waded through floodwaters as waves as high as palm trees washed over the seawall, turning a six-lane highway into a huge brown river.

Sidewalks and entrances to buildings were swamped and vehicles struggled to navigate the narrow streets.

Manila Hospital moved patients from its ground floor, where waters were neck-deep, spokeswoman Evangeline Morales said. Hospital generators were flooded and the building had no power since early Tuesday.

Visibility in the city was poor, with pounding rains obscuring the view. Emergency workers were evacuating river areas in the city that are notorious for flooding.

An Associated Press photographer said soldiers and police in trucks were moving thousands of residents, mostly women and children, from the Baseco shanty facing Manila port after many houses were washed away. Male family members were reluctant to leave saying they wanted to guard their property.

Residents in one neighborhood of Quezon City, a Manila suburb, were fleeing their homes due to rising water from the nearby San Mateo River, radio reported.

In the financial district of Makati, a billboard fell on two cars and a bus, causing injuries.

With its immense 400-mile (650-kilometer) cloud band, the typhoon threatened to foul weather across the entire main island of Luzon as it moves across the Philippines toward the South China Sea late Wednesday or early Thursday toward southern China.

Heavy downpours and winds prompted the closure of government offices, schools and universities in the capital, while scores of domestic flights were canceled and inter-island ferries grounded, stranding thousands. The Philippine Stock Exchange and U.S. Embassy were also closed Tuesday. Waters at the gates of the embassy compound, which is located along Manila Bay, reached chest-deep.

A tornado in Isabela's Maconancon town ripped off the roofs of at least five houses, injuring two people, police said.

Power was cut in many parts of Luzon, including in Manila, where hospitals, hotels and emergency services used generators. Tree branches and torn tarpaulins littered the flooded streets. Traffic was light as most people stayed indoors.

About 112,000 people were ordered to leave their homes in five towns prone to flash floods and landslides in central Albay province. By Monday, more than 50,000 had moved to government-run evacuation centers and relatives' homes, officials said.

"We can't manage typhoons, but we can manage their effects," Albay Gov. Joey Salceda said.

Authorities were monitoring farming communities at the base of Mayon volcano in Albay, about 212 miles (340 kilometers) southeast of Manila.

Tons of ash have been deposited on Mayon's slopes by past eruptions, and mudslides caused by a typhoon in 2006 buried entire villages, leaving about 1,600 people dead and missing.

The typhoon bore down on the Philippines exactly two years after nearly 500 people died in the worst flooding in decades in Manila, a city of 12 million, when a tropical storm hit.

Residents commemorated the anniversary by offering prayers and planting trees Monday.

Nesat is the 16th cyclone to lash the Philippines this year. The geography of the archipelago makes it a welcome mat for about 20 storms and typhoons forming in the Pacific each year.

Neither Republican nor Democratic leaders say a compromise has been brokered. Here's who's blaming who and how the bill could move forward:

The GOP has been irresponsible, writes Steve Benen at The Washington Monthly:

GOP leaders first decided to change the rules when it came to emergency disaster relief ? Republicans said they wouldn?t approve the aid unless Democrats accepted cuts to a successful clean-energy program. The Senate and the White House said this wouldn?t do, but the House GOP went ahead anyway.

House Republicans then decided to make the spending bill a little more attractive to far-right members, with the leadership buying some GOP votes by cutting $100 million from a Department of Energy loan program the GOP loved until a few weeks ago.

That's not true, says Brit Hume on Fox News Sunday:

The Republicans pass[ed] a bill that has the disaster relief funding in it, to the tune of several billion dollars and they pay[ed] for it with cuts in green jobs funding. Well, green job funding ought to be by now a very low priority given the history of it and the fact that its utterly failed to produce meaningful jobs.

They sent it to the Senate. What does the Senate do? The Senate blocks it and then does, so far, nothing... I ask you in this: who?s being responsible? And who?s playing politics?

Here is the reality. Congress?s policy towards disaster relief has always been that money is allocated in the budget, and if more is required because there are more or deeper disasters, Congress provides it in supplemental funding. The roots of this showdown go back to Cantor announcing on August 25, while Hurricane Irene wreaked havoc, that he would break precedent and demand offsets for recovery expenditures. Cantor and his House Republicans then wrote their continuing resolution for this year?s appropriations to take money from popular research programs to pay for the disaster relief, and insisted that the Senate accept their plan.

Either way, it call comes down to Harry Reid now, writes Jake Sherman at Politico:

Reid?s risky decision to wait until the 11th hour to hold a vote on a must-pass budget bill relies on the support of a handful of Republicans who previously backed a Democratic plan approving billions in federal disaster aid. It?s not clear whether it?ll work. Republicans appear well-positioned to prevent the Democratic leader?s hardball tactics from succeeding...

If he falls short Monday evening, Reid will be faced with a crucial decision: Either allow the Senate to pass a House Republican stopgap budget bill that Democrats blocked on Friday, or try to forge a new way forward that could peel off enough Senate GOP support and force the House to return from recess to pass their plan. It?s unclear which path the Senate will take, though top Democrats over the weekend began gaming out their legislative options with time running short and FEMA warning its dollars could run dry by Tuesday or Wednesday.

Suzanne Craft of the Veterans Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System and the University of Washington School of Medicine, Seattle, and colleagues wrote in the Archives of Neurology.

The study involved 104 patients with mild cognitive decline or mild to moderate Alzheimer?s disease.

Alzheimer?s experts warn that findings need to be confirmed in larger, longer trials, but they said it was a welcome advance at a time when few treatments have shown any sign of improving memory troubles in these patients.

?Anything that shows benefits even in stabilizing cognitive decline is worth noticing right now. Obviously, like any other study, it has to be replicated and independently confirmed. If that happens, then there will be a lot of interest in moving in this direction,? Dr. Sam Gandy of the Mount Sinai Alzheimer?s Disease Research Center in New York said in a telephone interview.

Study participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups: 36 participants got a moderate dose of insulin sprayed daily into their nose, 36 patients got a higher dose daily and 30 participants got a placebo daily for four months.

All treatments were given through a nasal drug delivery device made by Kurve Technology of Bothell, Washington.

The team looked to see if the treatment had any effect on how well study volunteers could remember a story right after they heard it and a after a short lapse in time.

After four months, the group that got the moderate insulin dose ? 20 International Units or IU ? showed improvements in delayed story recall compared with the placebo group. There is no improvement in the group that got the high dose of insulin ? 40 IU ? compared with the placebo group.

Both groups that got insulin also showed improvements in general thinking skills on a common assessment test known as ADAS-cog.

?Taken together, these results provide an impetus for future clinical trials,? Craft and colleagues wrote.

Dr. James Galvin of New York University Lang one Medical Center said although the study was small, it provides ?some of the most convincing evidence to date that insulin treatment may alleviate symptoms of Alzheimer?s disease.?

He said studies in large groups of people have suggested a link between type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer?s disease. And several animal studies suggest insulin given through the nose ? which delivers it only to the brain ? can improve the performance of diabetic mice genetically altered to develop Alzheimer?s disease.

?It?s interesting and promising. What it tells us for sure is this needs to be explored further in larger and longer trials,? said Dr. Laurie Ryan, program director for Alzheimer?s disease clinical trials at the National Institute on Aging, one of the National Institutes of Health, which funded the study.

But she remained cautious. ?In patients, anything can look good at this stage,? she said in a telephone interview.

More than 5.4 million Americans and 35 million people worldwide have Alzheimer?s, the most common form of dementia.

Current drugs temporarily treat symptoms, but there are no drugs that stop progression of Alzheimer?s, which is fatal.

?Mary Lennox [Monica Powell] is a lonely little girl who is sent to live with her uncle Archibald Craven [Zach Thomas] in Yorkshire after being orphaned by a cholera epidemic in India. Still grieving over the loss of his beloved wife Lily [Carly Prentis Jones and Mary Kathryn Walston] , who died 10 years earlier during childbirth and distraught over the condition of his bedridden son, Archibald casts a dark shadow over the manor until Mary discovers a secret garden that had once belonged to Lily. By nursing this garden back to life, Mary restores life to her grieving uncle, and to his son Colin [Asher Phillips]. This piece begins a season-long dialogue about the possibility of life and healing in all environments.?

?This show, with the ?ghost? chorus,? presents wonderful opportunities for dramatic lighting.
