New drug target identified for multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer's disease

Jan. 30, 2013 ? Researchers at Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) led by Carmela Abraham, PhD, professor of biochemistry, along with Cidi Chen, PhD, and other collaborators, report that the protein Klotho plays an important role in the health of myelin, the insulating material allowing for the rapid communication between nerve cells. These findings, which appear online in Journal of Neuroscience, may lead to new therapies for multiple sclerosis (MS) and Alzheimer's disease (AD), in which white matter abnormalities are also common but have been largely ignored.

MS is an inflammatory disease which damages the fatty myelin sheaths around the axons of the brain and spinal cord. This destruction, loss or scarring of the sheaths results in a broad spectrum of symptoms. Disease onset usually occurs in young adults, most commonly women.

In MS the myelin is attacked by the immune system and may not be completely restored by myelin-producing cells (mature oligodendrocytes). The researchers discovered that the addition of Klotho protein to immature oligodendrocytes causes them to mature and manufacture proteins needed for the production of healthy myelin.

"These results taken together indicate that Klotho could become a drug target for multiple sclerosis and other white matter diseases, including AD," explained Abraham.

Abraham and her colleagues have identified, and are working on optimizing, a number of small molecules that could form the basis for the development of therapeutic drugs, which would increase the amount of Klotho protein in the brain.

Since Klotho is not only an age suppressor but also a tumor suppressor, as shown by other research groups, interventions with Klotho-enhancing drugs may solve some of the most treatment-resistant human ailments according to Abraham.

Klotho was named after the Greek Goddess and daughter of Zeus, who spins the thread of life. Abraham's lab was the first to publish (in 2008) that Klotho levels in the brain decrease with age.

RBS hit by report of possible criminal charges over Libor

(Reuters) - Royal Bank of Scotland Group saw 1.3 billion pounds ($2.1 billion) wiped off its value on Tuesday following a report that it could face criminal charges as part of an impending settlement over its role in a global interest rate rigging scandal.

The Wall Street Journal reported that U.S. authorities were pushing RBS to accept criminal charges as part of a settlement which will see it fined up to 500 million pounds for the attempted manipulation of the London interbank lending rate (Libor) and other benchmark interest rates.

"It's put the word 'Libor' back in front of the banks and people are using it as an excuse to take profits," says Central Markets chief strategist Richard Perry.

RBS shares closed the day down 6 percent, the leading faller in a 0.28 percent-weaker European bank sector <.sx7p>, with volume in the bank's shares at 257 percent of the 90-day daily average.

The bank declined comment on the WSJ report.

One RBS shareholder told Reuters that criminal charges would make the bank more vulnerable to future litigation and said Chief Executive Stephen Hester would be reluctant for the bank to accept criminal responsibility.

"Stephen Hester is not the kind of man to play a dangerous game but the stakes here could be rather high," one of the bank's biggest institutional shareholders said.

The bank is braced for fines of up to 500 million pounds ($785 million) for its role in the scandal and expects the punishment to be meted out as early as next week, sources have said.

RBS, which is 81 percent owned by the British taxpayer, would be the third bank after Barclays and UBS to settle allegations over the attempted manipulation of the London interbank offered rate (Libor) and other benchmark interest rates.

Barclays was fined $453 million in June while UBS paid about $1.5 billion in December. However, some analysts believe those fines could be dwarfed by the costs to banks from civil litigation linked to attempted interest rate rigging.

BONUS BATTLES

British trade union Unite attacked RBS over a report in the Financial Times saying it planned to pay its investment bankers bonuses of as much as 250 million pounds at a time when branch staff are being laid off. Unite called on Britain's finance minister to intervene.

"Once again it looks like ordinary bank workers and taxpayers will pay the price for the greed at the top of RBS. It is time George Osborne put his foot down. This is no way to repay the country's patience," the union said.

RBS paid out 390 million pounds in bonuses at its investment bank a year ago. Sources have told Reuters it plans to reduce payments by over 100 million pounds this year to help pay Libor fines.

RBS is facing intense scrutiny on its pay and bonuses due to the state's majority ownership, although Barclays has also come under stiff pressure to cut pay for its executives and investment bank staff for several years.

Barclays is under particular pressure to show restraint this year following its Libor punishment and criticism that its culture and standards were too lax.

New CEO Antony Jenkins, who took over in August after his predecessor Bob Diamond was felled by the Libor scandal, has pledged to improve standards and restrain pay for staff and the bank has sounded out some leading investors for their views.

Barclays could award bonuses of 1.5 billion to 2 billion pounds for last year, Sky News reported on Tuesday, citing people close to the bank. That would be down from 2.2 billion a year ago.

Jenkins, who gets a base salary of 1.1 million pounds and could get 2.75 million in annual bonus, is being lined up to get a bonus of more than 1 million pounds, payable in deferred shares, Sky said.

Barclays declined to comment.

Syringe Design Change Could Cut HIV Transmission

Click here to listen to this podcast

Sharing syringes is a big no-no. But despite the warnings, needle sharing among injection drug users is still a significant cause for the spread of HIV and other infectious diseases. But HIV transmission due to needle sharing could be nearly eradicated by merely changing the design of the syringe. So says a study in the International Journal of Drug Policy. [William A. Zule et al, Are major reductions in new HIV infections possible with people who inject drugs? The case for low dead-space syringes in highly affected countries] When the plunger on a syringe is fully depressed, a small amount of fluid stays trapped in what is known as the "dead space." By reducing the amount of dead space in the syringe design, researchers say they can reduce the amount of infectious blood trapped inside by a factor of a thousand?and thus vastly reduce the numbers of viral particles available to spread disease. Using a simulation model, the authors found that switching to low-dead-space syringes could reduce annual HIV infections from syringe sharing to nearly zero within eight years. Although there are still a number of barriers to making low-dead-space syringes available worldwide, the authors say this low-cost intervention could help keep drug users?and their families?disease free. ?Gretchen Cuda Kroen [The above text is a transcript of this podcast] Follow Scientific American on Twitter @SciAm and @SciamBlogs. Israel warns of attack on Syrian chemical weapons

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israel could launch a pre-emptive strike to stop Syria's chemical weapons from reaching Lebanon's Hezbollah or al-Qaida inspired groups, officials said Sunday.

The warning came as the military moved a rocket defense system to a main northern city, and Israel's premier warned of dangers from both Syria and Iran.

Israel has long expressed concerns that Syrian President Bashar Assad, clinging to power during a 22-month civil war, could lose control over his chemical weapons.

Vice Prime Minister Silvan Shalom said Sunday that Israel's top security officials held a special meeting last week to discuss Syria's chemical weapons arsenal. The fact of the meeting, held the morning after a national election, had not been made public before.

Shalom told the Army Radio station that the transfer of weapons to violent groups, particularly the Iranian-backed Lebanese Hezbollah, would be a game changer.

"It would be crossing a line that would demand a different approach, including even action," he said. Asked whether this might mean a pre-emptive attack, he said: "We will have to make the decisions."

Israel has kept out of the civil war that has engulfed Syria and killed more than 60,000 people, but it is concerned that violence could spill over from its northern border into Israel.

Israel deployed its Iron Dome rocket defense system in the northern city of Haifa on Sunday. The city was battered by Hezbollah rocket fire during a war in the summer of 2006. The military called the deployment "routine."

Iron Dome, an Israel-developed system that shoots down incoming short-range rockets, was used to defend Israeli cities during a round of hostilities with Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip, on Israel's southern flank, last November.

Yisrael Hasson, a lawmaker and former deputy head of Israel's Shin Bet intelligence agency, said Israel was closely following developments in Syria to make sure chemical weapons don't "fall into the wrong hands."

"Syria has a massive amount of chemical weapons, and if they fall into hands even more extreme than Syria like Hezbollah or global jihad groups it would completely transform the map of threats," Hasson told Army Radio.

"Global jihad" is the term Israel uses for forces influenced by al-Qaida. Syria's rebels include al-Qaida-allied groups.

Syria has rarely acknowledged possessing chemical weapons.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu referred to threats from Syria and Iran at a Cabinet meeting Sunday. Iran is Syria's main regional ally.

"We must look around us, at what is happening in Iran and its proxies and at what is happening in other areas, with the deadly weapons in Syria, which is increasingly coming apart," he said.

Israel views Iran as an existential threat because of its nuclear and missile programs and support for violent anti-Israeli groups in Lebanon and Gaza, as well as repeated references by Iranian leaders to Israel's destruction. Iran denies it is seeking to build atomic weapons, insisting its nuclear program is for civilian purposes.

On Friday, Israeli Channel 2 TV broadcast an interview with a former Iranian diplomat who defected to the West in 2010. He warned that if Tehran gets nuclear weapons, it would use them against Israel. He did not provide evidence.

Part of Mohammad Reza Heydari's job was to draft foreign scientists to work on Tehran's nuclear program and he brought many from North Korea into Iran, the report said.

Heydari spoke from Oslo, where he has received political asylum.

Egyptian mourners bury 35 killed in Port Said riot

PORT SAID, Egypt (AP) ? Thousands of people who have turned out for a mass funeral for 35 people killed in rioting in the coastal city of Port Said are chanting against Egypt's Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.

Mourners in the funeral procession were shouting "There is no God but Allah, and Morsi is God's enemy" after praying for the dead Sunday at the city's Mariam Mosque.

There were no police or army troops in sight, but the funeral procession briefly halted after gunfire rang out. The source of the gunfire was not immediately known.

Health officials say at least 37 people were killed, including two policemen, in rioting on Saturday. The violence erupted after a court handed down death sentences to 21 local fans involved in a deadly melee at a soccer game last year.

Surprise winners liven up SAG Awards

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, TODAY

Don't place those Oscar bets yet: Sunday night's Screen Actors Guild Awards showed that there's no universal favorite among the films and actors who'll be competing at the Feb. 24 Academy Awards ceremony.

Lucy Nicholson / Reuters

Ben Affleck accepts the award for outstanding cast in a motion picture for "Argo."

"Argo," whose director, Ben Affleck was not even nominated by the Academy, won the biggest film award of the night, outstanding performance by an ensemble cast in a motion picture. Many awards-watchers had expected Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" to take home that prize, but that film hasn't shown the awards dominance critics expected.

"Argo" also beat "Lincoln" at the Golden Globes, taking home the best drama award as well as the best director award for Affleck.

While accepting the award for "Argo," Affleck praised "Lincoln" star Daniel Day-Lewis, who won the SAG award for outstanding actor in a motion picture, as expected.

"I can't believe I'm standing in the place where Daniel Day-Lewis just was," Affleck said. "Maybe I'll be a better actor, just from the radiation."

For his part, Day-Lewis, who's a heavy favorite to win best actor at the Oscars, noted that "it was an actor that murdered Abraham Lincoln, and therefore it is only fitting that every now and then, an actor tries to bring him back to life again."

Lucy Nicholson / Reuters

Daniel Day-Lewis accepts the award for outstanding male actor in a leading role for "Lincoln."

Day-Lewis' "Lincoln" co-star Tommy Lee Jones, who was suffering from the flu and wasn't in attendance, won the outstanding supporting actor award for his role as fiery Congressman Thaddeus Stevens.

Another film award came as a surprise to many. Jennifer Lawrence won the award for outstanding performance by a female actor in a leading role for "Silver Linings Playbook," an honor many thought would go to Jessica Chastain for her role in "Zero Dark Thirty."

Lawrence thanked director David O. Russell, whose 18-year old son is bipolar, like Bradley Cooper's character in the film.

"You made a movie ... for your son so that he wouldn't feel alone and so that he could feel understood," she said. "And I think I can speak on behalf of most of us in saying that you helped more than your son, you've helped so many sons and daughters, husbands, wives, everybody."?

In an expected win, Anne Hathaway took home the outstanding supporting actress award for her role as Fantine in "Les Miserables."

Chris Pizzello / AP

"I have loved every single moment of my life as an actor," Hathaway said. She went on to thank her mother, who once understudied the Fantine role, "for voting for me -- at least she better have!"

The first two television awards went to actors from "30 Rock."?Alec Baldwin won for outstanding male actor in a comedy series, and Tina Fey for outstanding female actor.

Baldwin collected his eighth SAG award, noting that his good fortune was "ridiculous," and said that his experience on "30 Rock" was "the greatest experience I've ever had."

Fey won her fifth SAG award. "Thank you for letting me in this union," she said in her speech.

She then earned big laughs for calling out fellow nominee Amy Poehler, joking that "I've known you since you were pregnant with Lena Dunham."

At the Golden Globes on Jan. 13, Dunham, 26, had thanked show hosts Fey and Poehler and other Globe nominees for "getting me through middle school," a remark the hosts were quick to pick up on when they returned to the stage.

Although "30 Rock" was nominated for outstanding performance by an ensemble in a comedy series, the award went to "Modern Family."

The cast of Modern Family poses with the Screen Actors Guild Award for Oustanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.

Bryan Cranston took home his first SAG award, for outstanding performance by a male actor in a drama series for "Breaking Bad." Cranston thanked series creator and producer Vince Gilligan, saying "he wrote the role of my career." Cranston would later return to the stage to stand with the "Argo" cast, as he plays a CIA supervisor in that film.

Claire Danes won the award for outstanding performance by a female actor in a drama series for "Homeland," another expected win.

Perhaps the biggest surprise in the television categories came when "Downton Abbey" won for oustanding performance by an ensemble in a drama series, beating the highly acclaimed?"Homeland" and "Mad Men," among others. Scottish actress Phyllis Logan, who plays housekeeper Mrs. Hughes, charmed many by hollering "Shut the French windows!" before thanking the cast and crew.

Julianne Moore won for outstanding performance by a female actor in a television movie or miniseries for her role as Sarah Palin in "Game Change," and Kevin Costner won the male actor honor for his role in "Hatfields and McCoys."

Dick Van Dyke received the SAG life achievement award. The award was supposed to be presented by Baldwin and longtime Van Dyke collaborator Carl Reiner, but Baldwin presented it solo. Van Dyke noted that Reiner was ill and couldn't attend.?

Van Dyke, who famously played comedy writer Rob Petrie on "The Dick Van Dyke Show," also joked that Reiner "waited five years to tell me it's PEE-trie, not PET-rie."

He also poked fun at his own much-lampooned Cockney accent in "Mary Poppins" and praised his peers as "the greatest generation in the history of acting," calling out the social activism of many actors in Darfur, Haiti, Somalia and other parts of the world.

UK: Specific threat to Westerners in Somaliland

LONDON (AP) ? British citizens should immediately leave the breakaway Somaliland region of Somalia because of a specific threat to Westerners, British diplomats said Sunday. It was the second such warning issued for an African region in just days and comes amid growing turbulence across the continent's north.

In a statement emailed to reporters, Britain's Foreign Office did not go into any further detail about the nature of the threat but noted that "kidnapping for financial or political gain, motivated by criminality or terrorism" is an issue throughout Somalia.

Somalia has endured years of civil war, and Britain ? along with the United States and a host of other countries ? has long advised against all travel to the Horn of Africa nation. Sunday's travel warning applies specifically to the northwest territory of Somaliland, which declared its independence from Somalia in 1991 and has since been a haven of relative peace amid the chaos and bloodshed of the country's south.

Somaliland Foreign Minister Mohamed Abdulahi Omar told a news conference that his government has full confidence in its security. "We don't believe in that warning," he said. "We are informing the public and foreigners in our country that there's no security scares at all. But in general, terrorism is a worldwide menace."

The new warning was issued only days after Britain, Germany, the Netherlands and Canada urged their citizens in the Libyan city of Benghazi to evacuate in response to what was then described as an imminent threat to Westerners. European officials told The Associated Press at the time that schools were thought to be among the potential targets.

The exact reason for the warnings remains unclear, but they come at a time of heightened tension across north Africa. French and African land forces are battling al-Qaida-linked Islamists in northern Mali, while a renewed bout of unrest has gripped Egypt following the two-year anniversary of the revolution that toppled strongman Hosni Mubarak.

In addition, a Jan. 16 attack on the Ain Amenas natural gas plant in the Sahara ignited a four-day siege by Algerian forces in which at least 37 hostages and 29 militants died. An al-Qaida-affiliated group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Libya also remains unstable following the overthrow of Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi.

It was unclear if any of those factors played a role in Britain's latest warning. The Foreign Office declined to comment beyond its brief statement.

Somaliland, a former British colony, is a key ally for neighboring Ethiopia, which has an embassy in the enclave, and collaborates with the United States and its allies on anti-terrorism missions. Somaliland employs its own security forces, justice system, and currency but is not recognized as a separate country by the international community.

Somaliland was most recently hit by terror attacks in 2008, when suicide car bombers struck inside the enclave and its neighboring Puntland territory, killing more than 29 people.

Lawrence brings 'walking pneumonia' to SAG

By Natalie Finn, E! Online

Frazer Harrison / Getty Images

Jennifer Lawrence said on the red carpet she has "walking pneumonia."

That flu Jennifer Lawrence was fighting at the Golden Globes apparently escalated into "walking pneumonia."

And yet ... the "Silver Linings Playbook" star somehow keeps looking better and better!?

The 22-year-old thesp, a Screen Actors Guild Award nominee Sunday night for best female actor in a leading role, threw on another Christian Dior confection -- this one a sleek, strapless column gown -- and Chopard jewels and hit the red carpet with her usual poise and sense of humor intact.?

Pregnant Busy Philipps talks vacay with Michelle Williams and Jason Segel

"It's highly contagious," Lawrence joked with E! News' Giuliana Rancic, quickly assuring that she's doing fine now.

As for that stunning gown ("just whatever, just Diorin' it up"), the burgeoning fashionista said it was only recently that she started to come into her own, style-wise.?

"I had my brothers' hand-me-downs," she told Ranic about being a reluctant tomboy growing up. "I had no choice! I didn't want to be, but my parents wouldn't buy me clothes. I had to wear my brothers' clothes, so I was literally wearing men's clothing.?

Exclusive: Mark Salling opens up about lawsuit on SAG Awards red carpet?

"I was mixing and matching, I could get some girl clothes," Lawrence joked.?

As for awards season, of which the two-time Oscar nominee has become a prominent fixture, Lawrence admitted to being a mix of scared and excited.?

"I never know what I'm going to say or do, so that's always nerve-wracking for me," she said.?

And yet that's always so wonderful for us!

Check out the best quotes from the carpet tonight!?

Meanwhile, though supporting actor nominee Tommy Lee Jones opted to keep his case of the flu confined to his house tonight (perhaps figuring cold medication might have put him in too good of a mood), Rust and Bone star Marion Cotillard braved the chill and came out with a cold.

Check out more stars looking stunning on the 2013 SAG Awards red carpet?

"Don't touch me, I am so sick," Cotillard -- a nominee for lead female actor -- told Rancic, sounding a little stuffed up but looking fabulous. "L.A. doesn't know how to deal with cold weather, I guess ... I never think it's going to be cold!"

Like Lawrence, Cotillard's secret weapons were Dior Haute Couture and Chopard.?

Azarenka beats Li, defends Australian Open title

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) ? Victoria Azarenka had the bulk of the crowd against her. The fireworks were fizzling out, and when she looked over the net she saw Li Na crashing to the court and almost knocking herself out.

Considering the cascading criticism she'd encountered after her previous win, Azarenka didn't need the focus of the Australian Open final to be on another medical timeout.

So after defending her title with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over the sixth-seeded Li in one of the most unusual finals ever at Melbourne Park, Azarenka understandably dropped her racket and cried tears of relief late Saturday night.

She heaved as she sobbed into a towel beside the court, before regaining her composure to collect the trophy.

"It isn't easy, that's for sure, but I knew what I had to do," the 23-year-old Belarusian said. "I had to stay calm. I had to stay positive. I just had to deal with the things that came onto me."

There were a lot of those things squeezed into the 2-hour, 40-minute match. Li, who was playing her second Australian Open final in three years, twisted her ankle and tumbled to the court in the second and third sets.

The second time was on the point immediately after a 10-minute delay for the Australia Day fireworks ? a familiar fixture in downtown Melbourne on Jan. 26, but not usually coinciding with a final.

Li had been sitting in her chair during the break, while Azarenka jogged and swung her racket around before leaving the court to rub some liniment into her legs to keep warm.

The 30-year-old Chinese player had tumbled to the court after twisting her left ankle and had it taped after falling in the fifth game of the second set. Immediately after the fireworks ceased, and with smoke still in the air, she twisted the ankle again, fell and hit the back of her head on the hard court.

The 2011 French Open champion was treated immediately by a tournament doctor and assessed for a concussion in another medical timeout before resuming the match.

"I think I was a little bit worried when I was falling," Li said, in her humorous, self-deprecating fashion. "Because two seconds I couldn't really see anything. It was totally black.

"So when the physio come, she was like, 'Focus on my finger.' I was laughing. I was thinking, 'This is tennis court, not like hospital.'"

Li's injury was obvious and attracted even more support for her from the 15,000-strong crowd.

Azarenka had generated some bad PR by taking a medical timeout after wasting five match points on her own serve in her semifinal win over American teenager Sloane Stephens on Thursday. She came back after the break and finished off Stephens in the next game, later telling an on-court interviewer that she "almost did the choke of the year."

She was accused of gamesmanship and manipulating the rules to get time to regain her composure against Stephens, but defended herself by saying she actually was having difficulty breathing because of a rib injury that needed to be fixed.

That explanation didn't convince everybody. So when she walked onto Rod Laver Arena on Saturday, there were some people who booed, and others who heckled her or mimicked the distinctive hooting sound she makes when she hits the ball.

"Unfortunately, you have to go through some rough patches to achieve great things," she said. "That's what makes it so special for me. I went through that, and I'm still able to kiss that beautiful trophy."

She didn't hold a grudge.

"I was expecting way worse, to be honest. What can you do? You just have to go out there and try to play tennis in the end of the day," she said. "It's a tennis match, tennis battle, final of the Australian Open. I was there to play that.

"The things what happened in the past, I did the best thing I could to explain, and it was left behind me already."

The match contained plenty of nervy moments and tension, and 16 service breaks ? nine for Li. But it also produced plenty of winners and bravery on big points.

Azarenka will retain the No. 1 ranking she's mostly held since her first Grand Slam win in Melbourne last year.

Li moved into the top five and is heartened by a recent trend of Australian runner-ups winning the French Open. She accomplished that in 2011, as did Ana Ivanovic (2008) and Maria Sharapova (2012).

"I wish I can do the same this year, as well," Li said.

Later Saturday, Bob and Mike Bryan won their record 13th Grand Slam men's doubles title, defeating the Dutch team of Robin Haase and Igor Sijsling 6-3, 6-4.

Sunday's men's final features two-time defending champion Novak Djokovic and U.S. Open winner Andy Murray. Djokovic is seeking to become the first man in the Open era to win three titles in a row in Australia.

Azarenka was planning a night of partying to celebrate her second major title, with her friend Redfoo and the Party Rock crew, and was hopeful of scoring some tickets to the men's final.

She said she needed to let her hair down after a draining two weeks and hoped that by being more open and frank in recent times she was clearing up any misconceptions the public had of her.

"When I came first on the tour I kind of was lost a little bit," he said. "I didn't know how to open up my personality. It's very difficult when you're alone. I was independent since I was, you know, 10 years old. It was a little bit scary and I wouldn't show my personality.

"So the (last) couple of years I learned how to open up to people and to share the moments. I wasn't really good before. I hope I got better. It's your judgment."

Turkish PM criticizes pre-trial detentions of military officers

ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has criticized the lengthy pre-trial detention of hundreds of military officers, suggesting it was sapping army morale just as Ankara vows to keep up pressure on Kurdish militants.

During his 10 years in power, Erdogan, whose party has moderate Islamist roots, has brought to heel the once all-powerful armed forces, which see themselves as guardians of secularism and regularly intervened in politics and carried out coups in previous decades.

Hundreds of serving and retired officers, including 20 percent of military generals, have been jailed pending trial since 2005 on conspiracy charges and plotting to overthrow the government.

But as initial public support for the investigations dwindles, with critics and even sympathizers saying cases have spiraled out of control, Erdogan has distanced himself from the trials.

"There are now close to 400 retired and serving officers inside. The most serious are accused of forming organizations or belonging to one. If the provisions for these are certain, then finish the job," Erdogan said late on Friday.

"But if there isn't certainty, then the hundreds of officers should be treated accordingly. This disrupts the entire morale of the Turkish armed forces. How can these people then fight terror?" he said in an interview with Turkish television.

While Erdogan has received praise for bringing the military under civilian control, the years defendants are spending in prison without conviction has raised fears the trials are a political witch hunt aimed at silencing opposition.

The first large-scale convictions came last September after a 21-month trial when more than 300 officers were handed prison sentences for plotting to topple Erdogan's government almost a decade ago. Hundreds more are still in jail awaiting trial.

Around 100 journalists are also in prison, as well as thousands of activists, lawyers, politicians and others. Most are accused of plotting against the government or supporting outlawed Kurdish militants.

Parliament voted to abolish the special courts used in coup conspiracy cases last July after Erdogan criticized prosecutors for acting as if they were "a different power within the state".

But the end of the special courts, established by Erdogan's government in 2005, will not affect existing prosecutions of the hundreds of military officers already in jail.

MILITANTS

Erdogan's latest comments also come after one of the most violent summers in three decades, with security forces locked in almost daily battles with militants from the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) and at a time of heightened tension with Syria.

Turkey has been one of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's fiercest critics and has seen violence from the war in its southern neighbor spill into its own territory. While Ankara does not want to get sucked further into the conflict, it has threatened cross-border military action if needed.

Turkey's conscript army is the second largest in NATO.

The PKK, designated a terrorist group by Ankara, the United States and the European Union, took up arms in 1984 and more than 40,000 people, mostly Kurds, have been killed since then.

The state-run Anatolian news agency reported on Saturday the military killed more than 1,500 "terrorists" inside and outside Turkey last year, citing the country's general staff. Turkish warplanes regularly launch air strikes on PKK targets in northern Iraq, where the guerrillas have bases.

Reuters could not independently verify the militant death tolls and Turkey's military rarely talks to the media.

Security forces, including army and police, have taken heavy casualties over the past year with PKK militants stepping up attacks on convoys and outposts.

Hopes of an end to the conflict grew, however, after the government acknowledged state intelligence officials were talking to jailed PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan.

While backing moves toward peace, Erdogan has vowed military operations will continue until the PKK disarms, a stance Kurdish politicians say undermines efforts to build trust.

Graphics Card ? Choose the Best one for Your Gaming Computer ...

Get Free Updates in your Inbox

Follow us on:

For those of you who are venturing into the life of a system builder, you are probably looking into the components you will need in order to build your first computer. There are a lot of different factors to consider when building a gaming-specific computer and there a ton of different components you will need to choose from.

No component, however, is more important to the gaming experience than the video card is. The video card basically is responsible for handling all of the graphics processing. And, since video games are so graphics-oriented these days, you need a high quality video card in order to experience them at their highest video settings.

Essentially, the video card is like a second ?mini? computer. However, instead of having to carry out standard computing tasks, the video card is only responsible for dealing with graphics. Video cards help relieve the main processor from having to deal with images and videos and therefore increase your system?s available resource, which ultimately improves your computer?s overall performance.

Not only that, but a high-end video card will completely change the way you think and feel about your favorite games. With improved graphics you?ll be able to see more detail, see further into the distance, and you will get an overall better gaming experience.

Therefore, it?s extremely important that you take your time when choosing a video card for your next gaming computer. In this post I will take you through the information you need to know in order to select a quality video card for your system.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Graphics Card

Video cards come in all shapes, sizes, and levels of performance. Not only should you look for a quality video card, but you should also look for one that will fit inside of your budget.

Pricing

In order to find a quality video card for your budget range, you will need to spend approximately 25-30% of your budget on your video card.

The following is a general chart of what kind of performance you can expert to receive at each price range:

$100-$150 : Decent Performance ? Will play most games on moderate settings.
$151-$200: Pretty Good Performance ? Will play most games on mid-to-high settings.
$201-$250: Good Performance ? Will play most games on high settings.
$251-$300: Great Performance ? Will play all games on high settings.
$300+: Ridiculous Performance ? Will play all games maxed out with ridiculously high frame rates.

Obviously, the more you spend on your video card, the more performance you will get out of it. However, you should not overspend on your video card and sacrifice the quality of the other components in your build. If you do that, you could create bottleneck and you won?t get as much performance out of your system as you should.

ATI vs. nVidia

There are two different manufactures of video card processors (or, what are more commonly known as graphics processing units-GPUs): ATI and nVidia. In all honesty, the competition between the two chipsets is relatively even. You really can?t go wrong with either GPU.

  • The current high-end chipset for nVidia is the 600 series (i.e. GTX 660, 670, 680, & 690)
  • The current high-end chipset for ATI is the 7000 series (i.e. HD 7850, 7870, 7950, 7970)

The only real difference between the two cards right now is that ATI chips generally handle anisotropic filtering better, while nVidia chips generally handle anti-aliasing better.

Either way, the difference between the two chipsets is so small, you probably wouldn?t recognize it in real in-game situations.

VRAM

VRAM, or video RAM, works basically the same way that your computer?s memory (RAM) works. However, instead of storing different types of data, VRAM only stores image data. And, the VRAM essentially works as a buffer between your processor and your computer?s display.

The quicker your video card is able to store images to memory, the faster and more fluid the graphics of your video game will flow. So, you want to make sure that you choose a video card that has a decent amount of dedicated memory.

Currently, quality video cards have about 2GB of dedicated memory. Also, most modern video cards utilize GDDR5 (Graphics Double Data Rate), which is the latest form of graphics card memory.

Here?s an example of how to see how much VRAM a video card has and what form of memory it uses:

XFX Core Edition FX-785A-CNL4 Radeon HD 7850 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card

As you can see by the bold underlined terms in the name, this video card has 2GB of GDDR5 dedicated memory. So, it would be a solid choice.

PCIe-3.0

Another thing to look for when choosing a video card, is the manner in which it connects to your motherboard. Pretty much all modern video cards connect to your motherboard via PCI express ports. However, there have been many different advancements in PCI express technology and you will want to choose a video card that can utilize the latest technology in order to receive the most performance.

Currently, PCIe-3.0 is the latest technology. So, make sure you get a motherboard that has a PCIe-3.0 port and a video card that can utilize it.

How to Choose a Quality Graphics Card

Aside from the factors discussed above, there are a few ways that you can guarantee that you get a quality video card for your gaming computer. They are:

  1. Read customer reviews of the card you are considering.
  2. Read expert reviews of the card you are considering.
  3. Only buy a video card from a reputable manufacturer.

Obviously, if the majority of the customers who have purchased a particular video card love it, then you will likely love it to. If they have had a ton of problems with it, then there is a good chance you will have problems with it as well.

If an expert gives the video card you are considering a great review, then there is probably good reason for it!

And, finally, by choosing a video card from a reputable manufacturer, you will be choosing a video card from a proven winner. Also, even though there is always a small chance that you could end up getting a faulty component ?from a reputable manufacturer (sometimes it just happens), you will have peace of mind in knowing that they back their products up with a good warranty and excellent support.

So, by using these three methods in unison, you can almost guarantee that you will come away with a good video card.

Top Video Card Manufacturers

  • ASUS
  • Gigabyte
  • Sapphire
  • XFX
  • MSI
  • eVGA

Make Sure You Choose a Good Video Card for Your New Gaming Computer

Ultimately, the video card you choose will have an enormous impact on the quality of your gaming computer. The better video card you get, the more enjoyable your gaming experience will be.

Just make sure you spend approximately 25-30% of your overall budget on a well-reviewed video card from a reputable manufacturer and you can?t go wrong.

It's time to howl at the Full Wolf Moon

NASA

Up-close exploration of the moon, Earth's only natural satellite, began in 1959 and hasn't stopped. Take a look at scenes from 50 years of moon exploration.

By Joe Rao, Space.com

The first full moon of 2013 will light up the night sky on Saturday night, but did you know it's a full moon of many names?

Full moon names date back to the Native American tribes of a few hundred years ago, who lived in what is now the northern and eastern United States. Those tribes kept track of the seasons by giving distinctive names to each recurring full moon. Their names were applied to the entire month in which each occurred.

There were some variations in the moon names, but in general, the same ones were used throughout the Algonquin tribes from New England on west to Lake Superior. European settlers followed their own customs and created some of their own names. Since the lunar (or "synodic") month is roughly 29.5 days in length on average, the dates of the full moon shift from year to year.

Here is a listing of all of the full moon names, as well as the dates and times for 2013. Unless otherwise noted, all times are for the Eastern time zone:

Jan. 26, 11:38 p.m. ET ?Full Wolf Moon: Amid the zero cold and deep snows of midwinter, the wolf packs howled hungrily outside Indian villages.? It was also known as the Old Moon or the Moon after Yule.? In some tribes this was the Full Snow Moon; most applied that name to the next moon. [Full Moon: Why Does It Happen? (Video)]

Feb. 25, 3:26 p.m. ET ?Full Snow Moon: Usually the heaviest snows fall in this month. Hunting becomes very difficult, and hence, to some tribes this was the Full Hunger Moon.?

March 27, 5:27 a.m. ET ?Full Worm Moon: In this month the ground softens and the earthworm casts reappear, inviting the return of the robins. The more northern tribes knew this as the Full Crow Moon, when the cawing of crows signals the end of winter, or the Full Crust Moon, because the snow cover becomes crusted from thawing by day and freezing at night. The Full Sap Moon, marking the time of tapping maple trees, is another variation. [Phases of the Moon in 2013: A Lunar Calendar]

In 2013, this is also the Paschal Full Moon?? the first full moon of the spring season. The first Sunday following the paschal moon is Easter Sunday, which indeed will be observed four days later on Sunday, March 31.

April 25, 3:57 p.m. ET ??Full Pink Moon: The grass pink or wild phlox is one of the earliest widespread flowers of the spring. Other names were the Full Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon and ? among coastal tribes ? the Full Fish Moon, when the shad come upstream to spawn. The moon will also undergo a very slight partial lunar eclipse, which will be visible from the Eastern Hemisphere, but not from North America. At its peak, less than 1.5 percent of the moon's diameter will be immersed in Earth?s umbral shadow; a very underwhelming event, to say the least.

May 25, 12:25 a.m. ET ??Full Flower Moon: Flowers are now abundant everywhere. It was also known as the Full Corn Planting Moon or the Milk Moon. The moon will also undergo a penumbral lunar eclipse, but the passage of the moon's disk into Earth's shadow will result in one of the slightest eclipses of all, administering a mere touch of penumbral shadow at the northernmost part of the lunar limb.

June 23, 7:32 a.m. ET ??Full Strawberry Moon: Strawberry-picking season peaks during this month.? Europeans called this the Rose Moon. The moon will also arrive at perigee only 32 minutes earlier, at 7 a.m. ET at a distance of 221,824 miles (356,991 kilometers) from Earth. So this is the biggest full moon of 2013. Very high ocean tides can be expected during the next two or three days, thanks to the coincidence of perigee with the full moon.?

July 22, 2:16 p.m. ET??Full Buck Moon: Named for when the new antlers of buck deer push out from their foreheads in coatings of velvety fur. It was also often called the Full Thunder Moon, thunderstorms now being most frequent. Sometimes it's also called the Full Hay Moon.

Aug. 20, 9:45 p.m. ET ??Full Sturgeon Moon: This large fish of the Great Lakes and other major bodies of water like Lake Champlain is most readily caught at this time. A few tribes knew it as the Full Red Moon, because when the moon rises it looks reddish through a sultry haze. It was also known as the Green Corn Moon or Grain Moon.

Sept. 19, 7:13 a.m. ET ??Full Harvest Moon: Traditionally, this designation goes to the full moon that occurs closest to the autumnal (fall) equinox. The Harvest Moon usually comes in September, but (on average) once or twice a decade it will fall in early October.? At the peak of the harvest, farmers can work into the night by the light of this moon.?

Usually the moon rises an average of 50 minutes later each night, but for the few nights around the Harvest Moon, the moon seems to rise at nearly the same time each night: just 25 to 30 minutes later across the U.S., and only 10 to 20 minutes later for much of Canada and Europe. Corn, pumpkins, squash, beans and wild rice ? the chief Indian staples ? are now ready for gathering.

Oct. 18, 7:38 p.m. ET ??Full Hunters' Moon: With the leaves falling and the deer fattened, it's now time to hunt.? Since the fields have been reaped, hunters can ride over the stubble, and can more easily see the fox, as well as other animals, which can be caught for a Thanksgiving banquet after the harvest.?

A penumbral lunar eclipse will also take place. Perhaps for some minutes centered on the time of greatest eclipse (7:50 p.m. ET) the penumbra might be marginally detectable over the moon?s southernmost limb, for at that moment the penumbral magnitude will reach 76.5 percent.? Those living across the eastern half of North America might see some evidence of this faint penumbral shading soon after local moonrise.

Nov. 17, 10:16 a.m. ET ?Full Beaver Moon: At this point of the year, it's time to set beaver traps before the swamps freeze to ensure a supply of warm winter furs. Another interpretation suggests that the name Beaver Full Moon came from the fact that the beavers are now active in their preparation for winter. It's also called the Frosty Moon.

Dec. 17, 4:28 a.m. ET ??Full Cold Moon: On occasion, this moon was also called the Moon Before Yule. December is also the month the winter cold fastens its grip. Sometimes this moon is referred to as the Full Long Nights Moon, and the term "Long Night" Moon is a very appropriate name because the nights are now indeed long and the moon is above the horizon a long time. This particular full moon makes its highest arc across the night sky because it's diametrically opposite to the low sun.?

(AP) ? American author Marilynne Robinson, Israel's Aharon Appelfeld and China's Yan Lianke are among 10 finalists for the Man Booker International Prize for fiction.

The award, an offshoot of Britain's better-known Man Booker novel-of-the-year prize, is awarded for a lifetime's work. It is open to authors of all nationalities whose work is available in English.

Prize organizers said both China's Yan and Russian finalist Vladimir Sorokin have had books banned in their homelands.

Yan fell foul of the authorities with "Dream of Ding Village," about the AIDS crisis caused by HIV-contaminated blood, and "To Serve the People," which features a character who can be aroused only when his lover smashes images of Chairman Mao.

Sorokin, best known for "The Ice Trilogy," had his early books banned in Soviet times.

Other finalists announced Thursday at the Jaipur Literary Festival in India include Lydia Davis of the United States, Pakistan's Intizar Husain, France's Marie NDiaye and Indian writer U.R. Ananthamurthy.

Josip Novakovich ? a Croatia-born Canadian writer ? and Switzerland's Peter Stamm round out the list.

Academic Christopher Ricks, who chairs the judging panel, said the 10 were "astonishingly different" writers who range in age from their 40s to their 80s.

Previous winners of the 60,000-pound ($95,000) award include Canada's Alice Munro, Nigeria's Chinua Achebe and Philip Roth of the United States.

The prize, awarded every two years, causes fierce debate and occasional controversy. In 2011, British spy writer John le Carre asked for his name to be removed from the shortlist ? he said he eschewed awards ? and one of the jurors resigned at the choice of Roth as winner.

This year's winner will be announced in London on May 22.

PFT: Brady fined $10K for Reed kick

Rex Ryan, Woody JohnsonAP

The man who claims he had no role in the decision to trade for quarterback Tim Tebow is now reportedly pulling the strings on a trade for cornerback Darrelle Revis.

Jets owner Woody Johnson, who apparently doesn?t want to be perceived a meddler, definitely isn?t afraid to meddle.

Otherwise, Johnson wouldn?t want anything when it comes to Tebow, Revis, or any other player other than what the employees he has hired to handle football matters want.? If new G.M. John Idzik decides it makes sense to move Revis as he enters the final year of a contract that will void if Revis is on the roster the day after next year?s Super Bowl, then that?s what Woody should want.? If Idzik decides otherwise, that?s what Woody should want.

Are we still surprised they couldn?t give the job away?

A trade during the offseason won?t be easy.? Revis is recovering from a torn ACL.? There?s no way to know whether he?ll be the same guy that he was until he?s back on the field.? While Vikings running back Adrian Peterson was better than ever after an ACL tear, Ravens cornerback Domonique Foxworth never was the same again ? and ultimately retired.

If the goal is maximizing the return, the Jets should keep working Revis back to 100 percent, hope he comes back as good (or better) than ever, then dangle him before the trade deadline during the 2013 season to a contending team.? Of course, that approach could create an unwanted in-season distraction, especially if the Jets end up being better than expected next year.

The problem is that, now that the cat is reportedly out of the bag, Revis and his agents will look for clarity from the Jets.? And anyone who trades for him won?t want to give what the Jets will want without protection against Revis walking away next February.

Then there?s the cap hit.? While the Jets would avoid $6 million that is owed to Revis in 2013 ($3 million base salary, $1 million reporting bonus, $1 million roster bonus, $1 million workout bonus), they?ll carry a $3 million charge for his 2011 option bonus and absorb a $6 million cap acceleration if he is traded before June 1.

In other words, for a pre-June 1 trade, he?ll cost $9 million against the cap whether he?s on the team or not.

After June 1, the cap hit would drop to $3 million in 2013, with another $6 million applying to the cap in 2014.

There?s no easy solution to this one, especially now that the plans are supposedly known.? At least it will add some spice to Idzik?s introductory press conference, which has been scheduled for Thursday morning.

Maybe he?ll make like Rex and hop a plane to the Bahamas instead.? With an owner who seems to want to be the G.M., it would be hard to blame Idzik.
