Happy New Year from iMore!

It's been a hell of a year. In 2012, with your help and support, we changed our name to iMore and relaunched on a powerful new platform with fantastic new forums. We released the official iMore app and some forum apps to go with it. We broke a bunch of news and wrote a bunch of editorials and reviews, we loved a lot of apps, and you did to, and we began our hall of fame.

iMore hit almost 2 million readers and 10 million pageviews a month and, as a network, Mobile Nations hit over 12 million readers and 56 million pageviews.

We launched a couple new podcasts, including Debug, a companion show to Iterate, we like to think of as DVD extras for apps, and Ad hoc, where we bring together a bunch of nerds to talk about everything but mobile (like Star Wars and James Bond). Yours truly also joined the team at MacBreak Weekly, bringing you a couple extra hours of Apple talk a week.

It's been a hell of a year. Crazy as it sounds, we're still only just getting started.

Next week brings CES 2013, and next month, Macworld|iWorld 2013. We'll be covering both. There are going to be new and better features on the website -- you'll be seeing some of them soon on our sibling sites. We're working on hard on making the forums best in class. We've got the iMore app 2.0 well underway, with a lot of your most requested features, including commenting and push notifications. The forum apps are going somewhere really interesting as well.

We've got some amazing guests lined up for the next few podcasts as well. We've already posted the iMore show's 2013 preview, and tomorrow we'll be posting a special Iterate interview with Pacific Helm. All of them.

And that's just the stuff I can tease.

Once again, it's all thanks to you, our readers, listeners, and viewers. We appreciate each and every one of you, and what you allow us to do for you and with you.

You're why 2013 is going to be our biggest, best year ever.

Thank you, and Happy New Year!

(AP Photo/NASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSS, File)

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) ? Since captivating the world with its acrobatic landing, the Mars rover Curiosity has fallen into a rhythm: Drive, snap pictures, zap at boulders, scoop up dirt. Repeat.

Topping its to-do list in the new year: Set off toward a Martian mountain ? a trek that will take up a good chunk of the year.

The original itinerary called for starting the drive before the Times Square ball drop, but Curiosity lingered longer than planned at a pit stop, delaying the trip.

Curiosity will now head for Mount Sharp in mid-February after it drills into its first rock.

"We'll probably be ready to hit the pedal to the metal and give the keys back to the rover drivers," mission chief scientist John Grotzinger said in a recent interview at his office on the sprawling NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory campus 15 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.

The road trip comes amid great expectations. After all, it's the reason the $2.5 billion mission targeted Gale Crater near the Martian equator. Soaring from the center of the ancient crater is a 3-mile-high peak with intriguing layers of rocks.

Curiosity's job is to figure out whether the landing site ever had the right environmental conditions to support microbes. Scientists already know water flowed in the past thanks to the rover's discovery of an old streambed. Besides water, life as we know it also needs energy, the sun.

What's missing are the chemical building blocks of life: complex carbon-based molecules. If they're preserved on Mars, scientists figure the best place to hunt for them is at the base of Mount Sharp where images from space reveal hints of interesting geology.

It's a six-month journey if Curiosity drives nonstop. But since scientists will want to command the six-wheel rover to rest and examine rocky outcrops along the way, it'll turn into a nine-month odyssey.

Before Curiosity can tackle a mountain, there's unfinished business to tend to. After spending the holiday taking measurements of the Martian atmosphere, Curiosity gears up for the first task of the new year: Finding the perfect rock to bore into.

The exercise ? from picking a rock to drilling to deciphering its chemical makeup ? is expected to last more than a month.

"We have promised everybody that we're going to go slowly," said Grotzinger, a geologist at the California Institute of Technology.

Curiosity's low-key adventures thus far are in contrast to the drama-filled touchdown that entranced the world in August. Since the car-size rover was too heavy to land using a parachute and airbags, engineers invented a daring new way that involved lowering it to the surface by cables. The risky arrival proved so successful and popular that NASA is planning an encore in 2020.

Curiosity joined another NASA rover, Opportunity, which has been exploring the Martian southern hemisphere since 2004. Opportunity's twin, Spirit, stopped communicating in 2010.

After nailing the landing, Curiosity fell into a routine. The first month was dominated by health checkups ? a tedious but essential prerequisite before driving. A chemistry laboratory on wheels, it's the most high-tech spacecraft to land on another planet so extra care was taken to ensure its tools, including its rock-zapping laser and robotic arm, worked.

Once it got the green light, it trundled to a waypoint that's home to three unique types of terrain to perform science experiments. Every time Curiosity roves, it leaves Morse code tracks in the soil, providing a visual signal between drives. The message spells out JPL, short for Jet Propulsion Lab, which built the rover.

So far, its odometer has logged less than a mile. Despite the slow going, scientists have been smitten with the postcards it beamed home, including a stylish self-portrait and tantalizing glimpses of Mount Sharp.

Huge expectations weigh on the mission with NASA balancing the need to feed the public's appetite while pursuing discoveries at its own pace. Last month, the space agency quashed Internet speculation that Curiosity had detected complex carbon compounds in a pinch of Martian soil by issuing a statement ahead of a science meeting where the team was due to present the latest findings.

American University space policy professor Howard McCurdy said Curiosity is currently in a transition, caught between the viral landing and the scientific payoff expected at Mount Sharp.

"It is interesting, but slow," he said in an email. "I expect public interest will rise as the rover gets closer to its destination."

Curiosity's prime mission lasts two years, but NASA expects the plutonium-powered rover to live far longer. A priority for its human handlers is to learn to operate it more efficiently so that it becomes second nature. Before heading to Mount Sharp, engineers plan a software update to Curiosity's computers to fix remaining bugs.

"We'll need to be pretty careful," project manager Richard Cook said of the upcoming drive. "We may find terrain that we're not comfortable driving in and we'll have to spend time driving around stuff."

Rihanna talks about Brown on Twitter

Rihanna and Chris Brown appear to be very much back together, if the Umbrella hitmaker's latest tweet is anything to go by.

After insisting she was single in a post on December 18th, the R&B star was spotted with Brown at the Los Angeles Lakers' Christmas Day basketball game, and now she has jetted off to the Ivory Coast to be with the Kiss Kiss singer as he prepares to perform at the Kora Awards in Abidjan.

And it seems Rihanna is keen to ring in 2013 as her ex's new lady love after posting a telling tweet on Sunday.

She wrote, "Are u still down baby? Are u really bout that life? Is you down for the ride?.......here we go again."

The couple split in early 2009 after a headline-grabbing fight, which left Rihanna battered and bruised and resulted in assault charges for Brown.

Brown split from model girlfriend Karrueche Tran earlier this year amid reports he had fallen in love with Rihanna again following a series of recording sessions with his ex.

Grainy video footage of Rihanna and Brown arriving in Abidjan has been obtained by celebrity blogger Perez Hilton.

'Extinct' whale found: Odd-looking pygmy whale traced back 2 million years

Extinct whale found? Well, sort of. Scientists have traced the lineage of the pygmy right whale back to an ancient family of whales called cetotheres, who were thought to be extinct.

    By Tia Ghose,?LiveScience.com / December 19, 2012

The pygmy right whale, a mysterious and elusive creature that rarely comes to shore, is the last living relative of an ancient group of whales long believed to be extinct, a new study suggests.

The findings, published Tuesday, Dec. 18, in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B, may help to explain why the enigmatic marine mammals look so different from any other living whale.

"The living pygmy right whale is, if you like, a remnant, almost like a living fossil," said Felix Marx, a paleontologist at the University of Otago in New Zealand. "It's the last survivor of quite an ancient lineage that until now no one thought was around."

    Living fossil

The relatively diminutive pygmy right whale, which grows to just 21 feet (6.5 meters) long, lives out in the open ocean. The elusive marine mammals inhabit the Southern Hemisphere and have only been spotted at sea a few dozen times. As a result, scientists know almost nothing about the species' habits or social structure.

The strange creature's arched, frownlike snout makes it look oddly different from other living whales. DNA analysis suggested pygmy right whales diverged from modern baleen whales such as the blue whale and the humpback whale between 17 million and 25 million years ago. However, the pygmy whales' snouts suggested they were more closely related to the family of whales that includes the bowhead whale. Yet there were no studies of fossils showing how the pygmy whale had evolved, Marx said. [In Photos: Tracking Humpback Whales]

To understand how the pygmy whale fit into the lineage of whales, Marx and his colleagues carefully analyzed the skull bones and other fossil fragments from pygmy right whales and several other ancient cetaceans.

The pygmy whale's skull most closely resembled that of an ancient family of whales called cetotheres that were thought to have gone extinct around 2 million years ago, the researchers found. Cetotheres emerged about 15 million years ago and once occupied oceans across the globe.

The findings help explain how pygmy whales evolved and may also help shed light on how these ancient "lost" whales lived. The new information is also a first step in reconstructing the ancient lineage all the way back to the point when all members of this group first diverged, he said.

Adafruit's Circuit Playground show to teach kids about electronics through cute components

Adafruit already welcomes newcomers to do-it-yourself device culture, but it still assumes a certain amount of comfort with coding and soldering. The shop now wants to accommodate the most basic of beginners by starting a children's web series that teaches electronics. Circuit Playground will provide activities, songs and stories that put a friendly face on engineering, in some ways very directly: many of the shows will involve big-eyed characters (and, naturally, corresponding toys) like Cappy the Capacitor. Although the series doesn't start until March, it could be vital to a generation of kids growing up immersed in technology -- and ultimately create a larger customer base for Adafruit in the process.

CashNetUSA | Where Health Insurance is Going - CashNetUSA

Where Health Insurance is Going by Max JaffeHealth costs are increasing at more than double that of general inflation. One single major medical expense could destroy a person financially; health insurance is a necessity to prevent financial catastrophe, as we are all only one step away from a major medical event. Simply braking a leg translates into thousands of dollars in medical expenses.

Rising medical expenses translate into rising costs for health insurance, both at the group level and the individual level. While most employers offer health insurance to their employees, the rising premium costs mean those higher premium costs are being passed along to employees, as the employee share of insurance has increased significantly over the last decade.

    Staying Healthy

As Benjamin Franklin once said, ?An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.? Research has proven that proper diet and exercise can keep you out of the doctor?s office. Both will not only keep you in good physical shape but will also allow you to be more productive, which could mean a larger bonus or that raise you?ve been wanting.

Many employers offer wellness programs; there are sometimes monetary incentives for participating, such as a free gym membership. If anything, the right foods can make you think better, and proper exercise can relieve stress. Both will keep you healthy and away from the doctor, thereby lowering your out-of-pocket medical expenses.

    Bringing Consumerism to Health Care

One way of keeping medical expenses down is to shop for health care not unlike the way we shop for consumables, such as plasma TV?s or shoes. That includes shopping for health insurance. If you are healthy, whether it be the result of participating in a wellness program or not, you might want to consider a high-deductible insurance plan. A high deductible plan will mean lower premiums; however, it will obviously take you longer to reach the total premium, at which time the insurance company begins to pay your health care expenses.

If you normally stay out of the doctor?s office, then a high deductible plan may be just the thing for you. That way you pay more when you go to the doctor but pay a whole lot less every month for your premium. You have to consider what might be best according to your situation.

In order for a health insurance plan to qualify as a high deductible plan, the deductible must be at least $1,200 for individual coverage and $2,400 for family coverage. Under the Affordable Care Act, a high-deductible plan must offer free preventive care before you meet the deductible.

It?s important to maintain a liquid account for the amount of the deductible in case you get sick. You don?t want to go into debt in order to cover your deductible.

    Opening Health Savings Accounts (HSA?s)

If you?re enrolled in a high-deductible health plan, as noted above, you?re eligible to participate in an HSA. As a matter of fact, you cannot contribute to an HSA unless you?re covered by a high-deductible plan. Like Flexible Savings Accounts (FSA?s), an HSA allows you to contribute pre-tax dollars; as long as the money is spent for health care (other than premiums) the money will be tax-free.

Unlike FSA?s, you won?t lose it if you don?t spend it. Also unlike FSA?s, the money is portable, even if your employer contributes into your account. You can even use the money (as long as it?s for a medical expense) in retirement if you wish.

Health insurance is not what it used to be. Gone are the days where your employer pays the entire premium, you go to the doctor at the slightest onset of feeling bad, and pay a $25 co-pay. We now need to think of paying for health care in the same way we think about paying for anything else we consume.

Ways To Build Online Traffic For Web Marketing | David Garn

When entering into affiliate promotion, you create partnerships with your affiliates. Parent companies may not provide direct day-to-day assistance, but you need to work within the constraints they set to benefit both you and the company. While hard work is wonderful, at times it is not enough. Advice provided in this article can fill in some overlooked perspectives.

If your target audience is older this will be especially important. By making your font size larger by even a point or two, you can increase your sales opportunities. If customers can read about your product, they are more likely to purchase it.

TIP! Look for a company with a high rate of sales conversion when choosing a affiliate program. Use a one percent ratio for a benchmark.

Never abuse this feature. The very best you can do with cookie stuffing is annoy your readers. This method can break the chains of affiliate tracking and it can also spread viruses.

To achieve success in affiliate marketing, taking the time to familiarize yourself with proven effective methods is one of the most important steps you will take. It is easy to jump on a free option the first time you look at marketing methods. There is absolutely nothing wrong with free, unless it does not help you in achieving your goals.

Have an accountant. You can hire a person, or go through a program. This way you can pay yourself for the hours of work you perform. Have your accounting plan in place before opening your business.

TIP! Make sure that you keep up with all of the latest information that is affecting the industry. Strive to stay one step ahead of your competitors, or they will be one the ones getting the business instead of you.

It is more useful to use a few good tips than to know a dozen. You will be taking a slight risk by putting your efforts into affiliate promotion programs prior to being compensated. If you are simply reading, eventually this will turn into delays. Put down the books, choose a few good tips and put them into action.

Produce a fresh, original, and creative newsletter that will make your potential customers decide to join your marketing list. When email first came into being, people enjoyed receiving them. You do not want people to think your emails are spam, so create them in a friendly and easy-to-use way.

It is important to have backlinks on your site, but make sure you don?t deceive your customers. A reader clicking on a ?No-cost ways to cure your insomnia? link does not want to end up on a page that barrages them with hard-sell tactics to buy insomnia supplements. Advertising your website as something it is not will not help you and your audience will not trust you.

TIP! Many people in the affiliate marketing world try to work to hard to become ?superb? affiliates. They end up doing too much at once becoming spread too thin and they end up no longer being able to compete in the marketplace.

You should use many different venues to advertise and promote your affiliate products. Many people love to search for online products. Some might prefer brochures and fliers. Some customers want to have a coupon for a percentage off the price. The broader the scope of your advertising, the more customers you can draw in.

When getting involved in internet marketing, it?s important to work with an affiliate company that has products you truly believe in and would be happy to promote and sell. Using a range of affiliate networks should provide you with multiple streams of income. Research the affiliate programs thoroughly before working with them. You need to know that you will feel comfortable promoting their products.

You will lose many of your initial customers, and you will need to get more people on board. In order to attract the attention of potential new customers from the very first moment they hear from you, you?ll need to have your best-performing emails on file.

TIP! Make use of an affiliate network. These networks can be useful to connect advertisers and webmasters.

Apply for a Travel Grant and Get Your Trip Funded for FreeTraveling can be one of the most important, memorable life experiences (especially if you're a student and study abroad). But what if you can't afford to globe-trot or go on a road trip? The Telegraph outlines ten ways you can travel for free?including getting an organization to fund your trip.

Believe it or not, some organisations exist with the sole purpose of funding travel. To cash in on this generosity, you'll need to present a clear, considered plan and persuade a board of people that your trip is worthwhile. Many organisations value trips that will enhance personal or cultural development, but each has its own specifications and criteria. The SPRET educational trust caters specifically for students based in certain areas, whereas UNESCO and the UN both offer more general funding to travellers.

The article is targeted towards students, and many travel grants are focused on educational purposes, but you might be able to find a travel grant even if you're not in school. In addition to the sources mentioned in the quote above, About.com's Student Travel site has a list of travel grants with brief descriptions of them.

If you can't get a grant, check out the other free travel suggestions from The Telegraph, including teaching abroad and volunteer vacations.

Eating asparagus may prevent a hangover, study suggests

Dec. 26, 2012 ? Drinking to ring in the New Year may leave many suffering with the dreaded hangover. According to a 2009 study in the Journal of Food Science, published by the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), the amino acids and minerals found in asparagus extract may alleviate alcohol hangover and protect liver cells against toxins.

Researchers at the Institute of Medical Science and Jeju National University in Korea analyzed the components of young asparagus shoots and leaves to compare their biochemical effects on human and rat liver cells. "The amino acid and mineral contents were found to be much higher in the leaves than the shoots," says lead researcher B.Y. Kim.

Chronic alcohol use causes oxidative stress on the liver as well as unpleasant physical effects associated with a hangover. "Cellular toxicities were significantly alleviated in response to treatment with the extracts of asparagus leaves and shoots," says Kim. "These results provide evidence of how the biological functions of asparagus can help alleviate alcohol hangover and protect liver cells."

Asparagus officinalis is a common vegetable that is widely consumed worldwide and has long been used as an herbal medicine due to its anticancer effects. It also has antifungal, anti-inflammatory and diuretic properties.

How to Save Time in the Kitchen this Christmas Holiday

    Entry #1957, December 24, 2012

Preparing holiday meals three times a day is not easy. Moreover, you have to plan, shop, and prepare the meals and perform the cleaning job afterward. The whole process is time consuming and when it comes to prepare festive meal with all the trimmings, you have to allot even more times to it.

Perfectly cooked turkey, mouth-watering gravy, and delicious roast potatoes do not appear by magic. However, that does not mean that the cooking will take up hours of your day. Follow these tips to save time on cooking and to enjoy this festive season with your dear ones instead of slaving over a hot stove all day.

    Make a Plan for Cooking:

Stop becoming experimental with cooking when it is Christmas time. Make a plan for preparing those dishes that you can cook well. Otherwise, you will end up spending your Christmas in the kitchen. Plus, sort out what items are essential for the lunch and what you can exclude from the list. Just for instance, people eat lots of nuts and chocolates during Christmas, so you do not really need to serve starters.

    Work in Advance:

In order to lessen the workload, you can prepare some items in advance. It is a better option than getting up at 6 a.m. to start cooking so that you can serve at lunchtime. Organize all the utensils in a manner so that you can have them within your reach when needed. Sort out plates, glasses, bowls, and cutlery, wash them, and put them to one side. Check if the carving knives are sharp enough and if the jugs are ready for cream, bread sauce, and gravy. You can peel and chop carrots and sprouts the day before Christmas and store them in the fridge.

    Save Time on Turkey:

You can save time by using one or two peeled onion for stuffing turkey and then cooking the stuffing in a different side dish. You can also prepare roast potatoes from raw beside turkey. It will take more time but will give you space for doing other necessary chores in the meantime. Another way to save time is to buy a ready-stuffed turkey.

    Roast Vegetables:

Consider roasting vegetables as it will give you space for doing other things. You can put them in, put them out of your mind, and save on washing up. Parsnips, sprouts, and carrots can be roasted for Christmas meal.

This season keep yourself sane with these Christmas tips to save time and energy! Happy holidays to you.

Shooter Who Ambushed Firefighters Left Note Showing Intent - Fox 4

(CNN) ? A sniper who ambushed volunteer firefighters in upstate New York on Monday, killing two and seriously wounding two others, left a note saying he hoped to burn down his neighborhood and kill as many people as possible, police said Tuesday.

William Spengler, 62, used a Bushmaster semiautomatic rifle, the same kind of weapon used in the assault on Sandy Hook Elementary School, Webster Police Chief Gerald Pickering said.

The shooter, who was convicted of killing his grandmother decades ago, was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound hours later.

Pickering, at a news conference Tuesday, read a sentence from the three-page typewritten note that detectives believe Spengler?s left behind: ?I still have to get ready to see how much of the neighborhood I can burn down and do what I like doing best ? killing people.?

The note indicated Spengler?s intentions, but not his motive, Pickering said. The rest of the contents will not be made public because it is evidence in a criminal investigation, he said.

There is ?all kinds of speculation? about why Spengler wanted to destroy his neighborhood and kill firefighters and residents, Pickering said.

One theory is that he was upset about a donation his mother, who died in the past year, made to the fire department, he said. Another theory is there could be a connection to his arrest in the killing of his grandmother, he said.

Spengler was convicted in 1981 of first-degree manslaughter in the death of his grandmother and had been released on supervised parole, Pickering said.

Investigators have been unable to find Spengler?s sister, who lived in the home with him, Pickering said.

Spengler?s former neighbor, Roger Vercruysse, said that Spengler was a nice guy who used to come over to Vercruysse?s sister?s house for holiday parties and would wave to the family from his front porch, where he often sat during the summer.

?He?d come to our house, we used to have picnics,? he said.

Spengler was especially attentive to his mother, who passed away in October, Vercruysse said, visiting her every day in the nursing home she lived in until she died.

?He loved his mama,? he said. ?He always talked about his mother.?

Spengler did not share the same closeness with his sister, with whom he shared his home, Vercruysse said.

?This was a clear ambush on first responders,? Pickering said. Spengler was firing from ?a natural depression? against a bank and a tree, he said.

An off-duty police officer, who happened on the scene, returned gunfire and sheltered firefighters with his car, Pickering said.

?Had the police officer not been there, more people would have been killed because he immediately engaged the shooter with a rifle,? he said. ?Essentially, it was a combat condition.? Investigators won?t know until after an autopsy if any of his shots hit Spengler, he said.

Officer John Ritter of the Greece, New York, Police Department, suffered minor shrapnel wounds but was released after treatment at a hospital.

The two wounded firefighters were in stable condition after surgery Tuesday, Pickering said Tuesday morning. They are being treated for ?serious injuries? in intensive care at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New York, he said.

Seven houses were destroyed and several others damaged by the fire, which investigators believe spread from a car parked next to the home where they believe Spengler lived, Pickering said.

Authorities do not know how Spengler obtained the Bushmaster rifle, .38-caliber revolver and 12-gauge shotgun he used, Pickering said. As a convicted felon, Spengler was not allowed to legally possess weapons.

In chilling audio heard over a scanner Monday, a West Webster Fire Department firefighter reported ?multiple firemen shot? ? including himself, with wounds to his lower back and lower leg ? and ?shots still being fired.?

?I?m pretty sure that we have two DOAs? ? the term for dead on arrival ? ?on the street,? the wounded firefighter said. ?? They?re down and not good.?

For several hours after that, the threat of gunfire stopped firefighters from battling the blaze and forced police SWAT teams to evacuate 33 people in the neighborhood of small waterfront homes.

The fire destroyed seven houses. It was under control by 2:30 p.m. ET, but authorities weren?t able to get into any of the homes. Pickering said it?s possible that more victims could be inside.

Lt. Michael Chiapperini, a firefighter who died at the scene, was a veteran of the West Webster Fire Department and a police lieutenant. He?d been named Firefighter of the Year just two weeks ago. And not long before that, he had volunteered to go to Long Island to help those suffering after Superstorm Sandy, New York Lt. Gov. Bob Duffy said.

The other slain firefighter was Tomasz Kaczowka, who was also a 911 dispatcher. He?d been with the West Webster Fire Department for just more than a year, department spokesman Al Sienkiewicz said.

The shooting occurred amid a renewed gun control debate after the December 14 elementary school massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, that killed 26 people, most of them children. The gunman in that case, Adam Lanza, also killed his mother and himself.

The head of a lobbying group that represents first responders said the Monday shooting was ?senseless and cruel.?

?The firefighters who responded today were performing a selfless, meaningful service to their community, unaware that a cold-hearted maniac was planning to ambush them and take their lives,? said Harold Schaitberger, general president of the Washington-based International Association of Fire Fighters. ?Coming on the heels of the horrific tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, and on Christmas Eve, this shooting is even harder to comprehend.?

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo described the Webster shooting as ?horrific.? And the state?s attorney general called it a ?senseless tragedy?

President Barack Obama has set a January deadline for ?concrete proposals? to deal with gun violence after the Newtown shooting.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-California, has said she will introduce legislation to reinstate the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004, while National Rifle Association CEO Wayne LaPierre has said his group will fight any new gun restrictions, saying most gun laws now on the books are rarely enforced.

Pickering, the Webster police chief, said it was important ? after the shooting in his town and others ? to ?get a handle on gun control.? He also said more needs to be done to make sure that dangerous people aren?t in society, where they can kill.

?For the last 20 years we have been turning people loose and deinstitutionalizing people, and I think we?ve swung too far,? he said. ?I think there are still people that need to be in institutions that are a danger to themselves or others. And this is a classic example.?

Lieberman fears country may go over 'fiscal cliff'

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Senators bickered Sunday over who's to blame for lurching the country toward a year-end "fiscal cliff," bemoaning the lack of a deal days before the deadline but bridging no differences in the debate.

With the collapse Thursday of House Speaker John Boehner's plan to allow tax rates to rise on million-dollar-plus incomes, Sen. Joe Lieberman said "it's the first time that I feel it's more likely we'll go over the cliff than not," meaning that higher taxes for most Americans and painful federal agency budget cuts would be in line to go ahead.

"If we allow that to happen it will be the most colossal consequential act of congressional irresponsibility in a long time, maybe ever in American history because of the impact it'll have on almost every American," said Lieberman, a Connecticut independent.

Wyoming Sen. Jon Barrasso, a member of the GOP leadership, predicted that the new year would come without an agreement, and he faulted the White House.

"I believe the president is eager to go over the cliff for political purposes. He senses a victory at the bottom of the cliff," he said.

Democratic Sen. Kent Conrad of North Dakota, chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, was incredulous at Barrasso's assertion that 'there is only one person that can provide the leadership" on such a matter vital to the nation's interests.

"There are 535 of us that can provide leadership. There are 435 in the House, 100 in the Senate and there is the president, all of us have a responsibility here," he said. "And, you know what is happening? What is happening is the same old tired blame game. He said/she said. I think the American people are tired of it. What they want to hear is what is the solution?"

No solution seemed any nearer, with Obama and Congress on a short holiday break. Congress is expected to be back at work Thursday and Obama in the White House after a few days in Hawaii.

"It is time to get back to the table," said Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., "And I hope if anyone sees these representatives from the House in line shopping or getting their Christmas turkey, they wish them a merry Christmas, they're civil, and then say go back to the table, not your own table, the table in Washington."

Predicted Lieberman: "We're going to spend New Year's Eve here I believe."

Obama already has scaled back his ambitions for a sweeping budget bargain. Before leaving the capital on Friday, he called for a limited measure that extend George W. Bush-era tax cuts for most people and stave off federal spending cuts. The president also urged Congress to extend jobless benefits for the long-term unemployed that would otherwise be cut off for 2 million people at the end of the year.

"The truth of the matter is, if we do fall off the cliff after the president is inaugurated, he'll come back, propose just what he proposed ... in leaving Washington and we'll end up adopting it, but why should we put the markets in such turmoil and the people misunderstanding or lack of confidence," said Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga. "Why not go ahead and act now?

Obama's announcement late Friday suggested that a smaller deal may rest in the Senate, given the failure of Boehner's option in the House.

"The ball is now clearly with the Senate," said Lieberman.

He said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and GOP leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky "have the ability to put this together again and pass something. It won't be a big, grand bargain to take care of the total debt, but they can do some things that will avoid the worst consequences going over the fiscal cliff."

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison said she expects "it is going to be a patch because in four days we can't solve everything."

It was only a week ago when news emerged that Obama and Boehner had significantly narrowed their differences. Both were offering a cut in taxes for most Americans, an increase for a relative few and cuts of roughly $1 trillion in spending over a year. Also included was a scaling back of future cost-of-living increases for Social Security recipients ? a concession on the president's part as much as agreeing to higher tax rates was for the speaker.

Lieberman was on CNN's "State of the Union," while Barrasso and Conrad appeared on "Fox News Sunday." Klobuchar and Isakson were on "Fox News Sunday," while Hutchison was on CBS' "Face the Nation."

popbestline4: The Truth About Article Marketing | Writing and ...

It seems as though article marketing is the biggest thing in Internet marketing right now. How do you get your name out there? Articles. How do you become an expert in your niche? Articles. How do you [insert money making phrase here]? Articles. But why? And how?

?You Should Believe Me Because I Know All?

Well written articles are powerful things ? they demonstrate your expertise to readers better than any ad, website, or banner can. And once you?re considered an expert, people listen to you. If a licensed medical doctor told you that you should take aspirin every day to lower your risk of a heart attack, would you listen? Yes (Well, hopefully) What if you read an article in Newsweek that said the UK was going to convert to using the Euro, would you believe it? Yes. Why? Because they?re experts on those subjects, and they say so. That?s the power articles can give you.

Author Resource Boxes Are The Trail Of Reese?s Pieces Leading Back To The Author?s Website

Why do authors write articles? It?s not just to solidify their expert status. That status alone is pretty much worthless. You?ve got to give the reader a place to go when they?re done reading your article ? a place to find out more about the subject. If they?ve read the entire article, chances are, they want to learn more from you. Authors give their readers that chance by putting a link to a place where they can find more information in your resource box, aka ? the About the Author area. Think about the traffic you would get from a site with 500,000 subscribers or more, and feel free to make the Homer Simpson drool sound.

Googlebot Loves Candy [or] There?s A Reason Why It?s Called Inktomi Slurp?

Who else loves to read an entire article, then follow the link back to the author?s website? That?s right, search engines do. Search engine bots will follow your trail of Reese?s Pieces all the way back to your site, then chill out there and look around while they finish the rest of the bag.

Your Link, All Over The Internet

Now that your article with your link in the resource box is on the web, publishers can read it. If they like it, they can re-print it in newsletters, ezines, websites, all over the web. And what are your conditions? The publisher can?t change it, and they have to include that active link to your site. Now you have your link, all over the Internet.

Another added bonus of other sites reprinting your articles is SEO. If a site that ranks very high in the results for keywords related to your article picks it up, the chances of someone getting to your article through a search engine are high. This is kind of a round about way of getting search engine traffic, as some of those people will also follow the link in your resource box.

Where Can I Submit My Articles?

Yep. You can submit your article to individual article directories by hand, and get the job done. In fact, here is a great site that has around 100 directories listed on it:?http://www.arcanaweb.com/resources/article-directories.html

But even if you assume it will take 1 minute (that?s being very generous) per submission, that?s still over an hour and a half of work you?re doing to submit your article to only 100 sites.

Wow, That Sucks? Is there a better way?

Yep again. I use a service called Article Marketer (http://www.Article-Marketer.com) to submit my articles. They go above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that publishers are only sent the highest quality work by weeding out spam, advertorials, and articles with bad grammar. In fact, since my articles aren?t spam, they?ll work with me to whip the article into shape, and ensure that I?ll get the most bang for my submission buck, and the publishers get the content they?re looking for.

Article Marketer can submit to roughly 30,000 publishers and article directories, and is very reasonably priced. If you?re about to publish a few articles, you have the choice of a low per article fee, or you can get a 3-month subscription and submit an unlimited number of articles. This choice is invaluable if I?m launching a few websites in a month and need to promote them all.

Best of all, it doesn?t take me hours, it takes me minutes. Using a submission service saves me time and effort, and it gets my articles out to places and people I never would have known about otherwise. Actually, I?m going to use Article-Marketer.com to submit this article, too. (By the time you read this, I?ll have already submitted this article through them, haha!)

Wow, You Really Know Your Stuff

I write articles for nearly every website that I create, and I see the benefits almost instantly when I submit a well-written article. (I also own my own article directory, so I know what it?s like to be on the receiving end, too)

Now that you know why article marketing is king, start writing. There are thousands of content-hungry publishers out there, ready to reprint your articles and make you an expert with TONS of Reese?s Pieces?

Before you invest in penny stocks look past the hype | TSI Network

    penny stocks

Some investors think the best way to profit in stocks is to buy them when they are just barely starting out on a growth phase they hope will last for years if not decades. Ideally, they want to buy the future top performers when they are still near or close to the penny stock range and have yet to be discovered by the broad mass of investors.

And it?s true that when you buy penny stocks you could have a big payday if you make the right choice. But the odds against success are high. Penny stocks are almost always involved in riskier ventures, such as finding mineral deposits that can be mined at a profit, commercializing unproven technologies or launching new software.

What?s more, it?s much easier to launch and promote a stock than it is to start a successful business. So penny stocks attract more than their share of unscrupulous operators and stock promoters.

    Look out for over-publicized deals

Penny stock promoters love to make deals with major, household-name companies. They?re sure the public is far more likely to buy penny stocks that have agreements with Teck Resources, BHP Billiton or another major mining company to finance exploration of their mining claims.

    1. Major company involvement is frequently exaggerated: When promoters manage to make a deal with a major firm, they often go to great lengths to make it seem bigger than it is. Instead of announcing that the big company has invested, say, $50,000, a stock promoter may issue a press release saying the two companies have entered into a ?multi-stage development plan.? The release may say the major company has agreed to spend ?up to $10 million? or some other exalted figure. It will usually provide a toll-free number or web address for investors to order or download the glossy brochures.

    1. Big companies have far more bargaining power than individual investors: It pays to remember that a big company doesn?t go into a situation like this the same way you do. If the big company agrees to spend $50,000 to study the mining property, new technology or pioneering program, it will also insist on a series of options that let it invest ever-larger sums on favourable terms. But the big company will always reserve the right to drop out and cut its losses. In most cases, it will exercise that right.

A major mining company will gladly spend $50,000 one hundred times, and lose every penny of it?a total outlay of $5 million?if this means it will get a chance to develop the one rare project that?s ultimately worth an investment of, say, $500 million. If it waits till the property, technology or program has proven itself, development rights will be far more costly. So it gets in early by investing what are really just token amounts of money for a major firm. That?s why big-company involvement by itself is never a good reason to buy penny stocks.

Watch for these 4 factors when choosing penny stocks

In addition to avoiding Canadian penny stocks that promote themselves too aggressively (or do so misleadingly) here are 4 more things we look for when we analyze penny stocks for Stock Pickers Digest, our newsletter for aggressive investing.

    1. We want to see experienced management with a proven ability to develop and finance a mine.
    2. We look at environmental constraints in places where junior mines are exploring for minerals. In Europe and certain parts of the U.S., junior mines need a particularly rich find to justify the costs of overcoming environmentalists? objections.
    3. When we recommend junior mines that only explore for minerals, we prefer those that operate in an area whose geology is similar to that of nearby producing mines.
    4. We think you should avoid stocks that trade over the counter, where such things as regulatory reporting are lax.

Investors in penny stocks also face one overriding, continual risk: it?s easier to launch a promising company than to create a successful business. That?s why only a minority of junior companies ever go on to significant success.
